Kim Sutherland

Kim Marie Sutherland, OAM, is a music director, conductor and teacher. She founded the Hunter Singers group in 1989 and is the Head Teacher of Creative and Performing Arts at Merewether High School, Newcastle. With the Hunter Singers she has released albums, toured both Australia and internationally. In June 2013 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia, with the citation, "for services to the arts".
Biography
Sutherland graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, completed a Master of Fine Arts, studied conducting with Myer Fredman and has been involved in many performances of all different levels and types.
In 1989 Sutherland founded the choir group, Hunter Singers, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014. Sutherland's leadership of Hunter Singers has brought her and them to recognition at many high levels, through many performances. With her support, Hunter Singers has produced two CDs and made overseas tours to the United States, Italy, New Zealand and Canada. Performances in iconic locations like the Salzburg Cathedral and the Verona Arena Di Verona Festival provided the young talents of Hunter Singers with the excitement of international competition and the learning, experience and growth that comes with it. In 2018 Hunter Singers with Kim Sutherland, toured Australia and Canada.
Awards
Sutherland has received many forms of award and recognition for her services. She won the Wesley Institute Orchestral Conducting Competition in 1999, the Australian Council of Education Quality Teaching Award, was a finalist for the NSW Department of Education Teacher of the Year in 2001 and has received many other commendations, awards and honours.
In June 2013 she was given a Medal of the Order of Australia, with the citation, "for services to the arts".
