Jay B.Douglas

Jay B. Douglas was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1952, and is the first Australian/ South African Yodeller.
He first learnt to play piano in 1963, but soon found the guitar a more suitable instrument for the music he enjoyed.
In 1971, he, along with his parents (both musicians)immagrated to Sydney, Australia where he got himself involved with
bands and other musicians including organisations such as the Church of England Youth Department where he worked as a
guitarist under the direction of Jeff Carroll to produce Life, Rythym In Religion and Tricky Nick. There were also a
number of talent quests that he entered. "The talent Quest scene was my apprenticeship time" is what he would tell
everyone.
Jay came to the fore through his involvement with the late Australian country music historian, Eric Watson of
Selection Records in 1978 on his second trip to the Tamworth Country Music Festival. In 1979, he received an award
for yodelling through the C.C.M.A. at the same festival and was signed to Hadley records for his first album,
" Singing & Yodelling." He also toured with the Brian Young country show throughout Australia that year.
"What I heard on tape did not come out on vynil" is what he is supposed to have said after the release of this
first album. This led him to sound production and the earning of a degree in audio engineering and creative arts in 1985.
In 1991 Jay produced his first live show "Frontline Country" in Canberra. Another Australian tour was developed from this
one called "Yarrandoo." A second album, As Promised" was recorded under the direction of Cass Gascoigne at Winston Park
Studios at Dubbo, NSW in 1993.
