KernelEx is an open-source compatibility layer for Windows 98/Me to enable some newer applications, unsupported on these operating systems. It implements some API routines from NT-based Windows 2000/XP. KernelEx is independent from Microsoft (which has ended support for Windows 98/Me on July 11, 2006) and is maintained by enthusiasts. Latest version (v4.5.2) was released on November 2011. It works as an VxD (VKrnlEx.vxd) which modifies kernel image in memory. Previous versions worked by modifying the kernel file on disk (kernel32.dll). Building KernelEx requires 6.0 with Service Pack 6, Microsoft Platform SDK February 2003 Edition and Driver Development Kit for Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
