Education
Valin studied at the University of Sherbrooke in Québec, Canada. He earned a Bachelors degree in electrical engineering in 1999, a Masters degree in 2001, and a doctorate in 2005. His doctoral thesis offered a presentation of a system for auditive technology for a mobile robot.
Professional background
Valin worked for InfoSpace Speech Solutions (2001), for the Information and communications technology center of the national Australian government body for scientific research known as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and for Octasic Inc., where he focused on speech communication and speech recognition systems. In 2002, Valin started working in Speex with help from David Rowe (Codec2). In July 2011, Valin began working on Opus at the Mozilla Corporation. , he is working on the development of a free video compression format known as Daala, which is designed to offer a free alternative to HEVC/H.265.
