Karinkuzhi

Karinkuzhi is a village located on the southern side of Karinkuzhi river on the Vellur-Padiyottuchal-Pulingome road in Kannur District, Kerala, in India.
Etymology
The name comes from the Tamil words kari (char) and kuzhi (pit), the name is supposedly originated from a story about Daksha 'The Emperor' and Lord Shiva.
Location
Karinkuzhi is bordered by Kankol (north), Alakkad (east), Echilamvayal (south), and Vellur-theru on west. Karinkuzhi is about 4 km north of Payyanur Municipal center. There are two industrial organisations in the area: a 110KV Electric Substation and Western India Polymer.
Economy
Karinkuzhi is primarily an agricultural area and it was selected as one of the ‘Ela’s during the great green revolution. The dam across the Karinkuzhi river helped the growth of agricultural activities.
Sports and Games
Karinkuzhi once had one of the largest playgrounds in the Payyanur area. Until 1970 most of the school and district athletic meets were held here. In the 1970s the Kerala government converted this into an electric substation.
Transportation
The national highway passes through Perumba junction. Goa and Mumbai can be accessed on the northern side and Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram can be accessed on the southern side. The road to the east of Iritty connects to Mysore and Bangalore. The nearest railway station is Payyanur on Mangalore-Palakkad line.
