On the July 19 episode of SmackDown, Cesaro was drafted to Raw in the 6th round of the 2016 WWE draft. Afterwards, while being interviewed live on the WWE Network by JoJo, Cesaro legitimately complained about how he should have been drafted "at least top 10" and thought he would be a better fit on the more wrestling-oriented SmackDown brand, as well as criticizing the decision to have the storyline focus on the potential drama between Stephanie McMahon and Raw General Manager Mick Foley as opposed to the wrestlers themselves. While WWE would eventually play continue this as part of an angle, Dave Meltzer confirmed on Twitter that the interview was a shoot and that Cesaro had unexpectedly gone off-script.
After the draft, Cesaro started a feud with Sheamus. He defeated Sheamus in two consecutive matches, resulting in Cesaro earning a championship match for the United States Championship, which he received on the August 8 episode of Raw against Rusev, but lost after interference from Sheamus. Mick Foley then announced that the pair would face each other in a best-of-seven series. Sheamus won the first match at SummerSlam. Sheamus would defeat Cesaro in the second and third matches, but Cesaro defeated Sheamus in the fourth, fifth and sixth match, tying the series 3-3. At Clash of Champions, Cesaro fought Sheamus to a no contest when neither man could continue, leaving the outcome of their best-of-7 series undecided. Because they impressed general manager Mick Foley, he chose to pair up the two as a tag team for to gain a future WWE Raw Tag Team Championship opportunity, and on the September 26 episode of Raw, they defeated local competitors, while trying to one-up each other. Cesaro and Sheamus defeated The New Day on the October 24 episode of Raw and defeated them by disqualification at Hell in a Cell. As the titles cannot change hands on a disqualification, they did not win the titles. On the November 7 episode of Raw, Cesaro and Sheamus were announced as part of Team Raw for the 10-on-10 Survivor Series Tag Team Elimination match at Survivor Series on November 20, 2016, which Team Raw won. Cesaro and Sheamus were the sole survivors for their team. The next night on Raw, Cesaro and Sheamus again failed to capture the tag titles from The New Day following outside interference from Xavier Woods. After a scripted bar fight on the November 28th edition of Raw where they initially spoke of their apparent split as a tag team, the two men finally began to see eye-to-eye, reforming their team, and appearing to at last be on the same page. After getting on the same page, they again lost to The New Day in two more title matches on Raw, both defeats were a result of outside interference and not taking the fall in a triple threat tag team match respectively. They received another title shot at Roadblock: End of the Line, where Cesaro and Sheamus finally defeated The New Day to win the Raw Tag Team Championship, marking Cesaro's second reign. On 16 January, Cesaro announced his participation in the Royal Rumble match. At the Royal Rumble, Cesaro and Sheamus lost the Tag Team Championship to Gallows and Anderson.
On July 19 at the 2016 WWE draft, Sheamus was drafted to Raw. On the July 25 episode of Raw Sheamus was part of a fatal four-way match to determine the number one contender for the newly unveiled WWE Universal Championship, the match was later won by Roman Reigns. Sheamus would then begin a rivalry with Cesaro, after losing to Cesaro on the August 1 episode of Raw the two would continue to brawl after the match with match officials having to pull them apart. On the August 8 episode of Raw, after losing to Cesaro in a rematch, he would later cost Cesaro the United States Championship after interfering in his main event impromptu match against Rusev. The following week, Raw General Manager Mick Foley booked Sheamus and Cesaro in a Best of Seven Series, with the first match taking place at SummerSlam, which Sheamus won. Sheamus would defeat Cesaro in the second and third matches, but lost to Cesaro in the fourth, fifth and sixth matches. At Clash of Champions, neither man won as the match was declared a no contest, leaving their series tied at 3-3. The next night on Raw, Mick Foley decided to make the two partners to receive a future WWE Raw Tag Team Championship opportunity. Later that night, they defeated a few local athletes, but still did not seem to be seeing eye to eye. ( )
