Kannada devanga chettiar

About Kannada devanga chettiar
World is the creation of Lord Shiva. Shiva first created Shakti, then with the help of Shakti he created this world. Shiva and Shakti are inseparable. Brahma was wished with Rakshasha Guna, Vishnu with Satvitha Guna and uthirar with Thamatha Guna. In the Tirumurti system, Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the maintainer or preserver, and Uthirar is the destroyer or transformer.

As directed by lord Shiva, Brahma created Brahma deva's, land, water, hills, sea, tree, birds and animals. Manu was created by god to serve the deva's and humans by weaving clothes to them. After long time Manu was given motcha by lord Shiva. So there's no one available to take care of weaving clothes to deva's and humans. So the deva's complained the same to God Shiva.

On seeing the necessity Lord Shiva created "Delavan" who has all good characteristics. He too given him a varam that whenever a need arises he can pray Lord Sowdeswari and so she can come and help him when he is in trouble and blessed that he will also be called as "Devangan" because he is serving and helping deva's by weaving clothes to them.

Rakshasha started troubling Devangan because he is serving deva's. He called Lord Sowdeswari on a fine New Moon day, Sowdeswari appeared with her sulayitha pada and smashed the Rakshasha’s. And hence forth we are praying her on every full moon day without working on that day.

Kannada speaking community of Devangas in Tamil Nadu mainly based near the cities of Dindugal,Chinnalapatti, Madurai,T.Kunnathur, Salem, Theni, Bodinayakanur, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode, Aruppukottai, Sulakkarai, Chennai and Virudhunagar.

In Karnataka they are predominantly present in Kollegal, Dodda Ballapur, Bangalore, and Mysore. As per information passed from their ancestors, it was said that they had migrated from Mysore zone, when these areas were under the rule of King Chikku Chamaraja Wadiar of Mysore (around 1660 CE).

In Andra Pradesh they are present in Hyderabad, Warrangal and Guntur.

In Kerala they are in Vadakanancheri and Cochin.

Goddess Chowdeshwari
Goddess Chowdeshwari (Chowdeshwari a form of Durga, a warrior Goddess created by the Gods Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, to fight the demon Mahishasura), perched on a lion, fought and vanquished the demons so that Devala Maharishi could give the cloth to the king.

Marriages
Devanga marriages are similar to Hindu marriages with subtle differences. Devangas generally have sangas or marriage consultants who will have the list of prospective brides and grooms. Most of the Devanga marriages are arranged marriages. Generally it is the parents of the groom or bride who search for the prospective partner for their children. The groom or bride generally gives an opinion as to the qualities, education, occupation etc. they would like to see in the future partner.

Once the parents shortlist the girl or boy, horoscope matching is done with the help of an astrologer. Once the matching is agreed by the astrologer, a meeting of the prospective boy and girl is arranged over a cup of tea or coffee. Boy and girl exchange their views and if agreed to by both boy and girl a date is fixed for the engagement, which is a small ceremony, generally held at the girl's house, wherein relatives of both boy and girl are present. If there are space constraints, the ceremony is held in a hotel or marriage hall. Ring is exchanged after engagement. Now the boy and girl are free to move around together to movies and restaurants. Premarital sex is not permitted.

The marriage date is fixed on the day of engagement. Marriages are generally held at marriage halls, or "choultries" as they are popularly called. Marriages are elaborate ceremonies lasting two to three days. (Due to rising costs, it is nowadays usually restricted to two days.) On the day prior to the wedding day, the bride arrives at the marriage hall. She seeks the blessings of the god. Then rituals will start.

On the morning of the next day, the groom goes to temple with dhoti and umbrella for a ritual called kashiyatra wherein he is intercepted by the parents of the bride and his feet is washed by the girl's parents on a silver plate. After this ritual, the groom moves to the marriage hall for the all-important sacred thread tying (Mangal sutra) which marks the culmination of bachelorhood and entering into married life. This is followed by lunch to all the invitees. In the evening a reception is arranged wherein the bride and bridegroom sit/stand on a podium. All the invitees greet the newlywed couples. This is followed by dinner.

Thanks for the history of our community.

And If you could explain history of tegai like,

What is the neccesity of creation of different tegai (Kulam) in devangar by GOD? Each tegai people, What there are supposed to do ? how they are related.

And diet should be followed by our people?

We are wearing holy thread in our body. But our people eats non-veg weekly 2-3 times, no day without drinks. And I could see more 90% of our devangar community people are having very worse behaviour and habits. how do u see this? is this becuase of any curse to our people?

Thanks once again, Please reply me with answers.

very nice question.

Our people doesnot know what we are. Actually in those days only limited profession and we had good talent to progress. But unfortunately not enough information transformation, clear thinking and not enough implementation and ununitedness created problem not improving in any area collectively. We are individually good but collectively bad.

Let us forget what has happened and not to repeatedly chew on old history. Let us think our community as whole in India. Population wise we are having mejestic figure, if we think properly we can run the government. But we could not. If any body willing to right now join in this to improve we will start from this point. So let us move.
Thank you

With love

Dear Friends,

I am surprised to see how our peoples living with dirty customs and rituals, for e.g., after death of any person they wish to gamble cards in front of death body and like to consume liquor with using abusive languages and as such many more things left which I am not interest to insult our caste traditions.

I only request to our people that not to wear holy threads (Poonool) which is followed by Brahmins, because it is sacred and to value for its power. However I supposed to be think that our peoples for coming generation, they never to change their lifestyles and peculiar customs.

If given information of our peoples is unclear, please let me know of clear history of our peoples.

Shall I ask you all something?

Do anyone of you have explanation for our people not getting married from the same KULAM? Tell me if you are sure about the reason. Dont simply say the same KULAM ppl are brothers/sisters. I couldnt even find any sort of blood relation ship among the same KULAM ppl.

The most hating part in our community is that we still encourage marriage within the same family, such as athai magal/magan/ and the sadest thing is our ppl marry those whom we want to treat as daughter (marrying sister's daughter). Im feeling ashamed being a part of the system and being not able to bring in some sort of corrections at least barring all these non-sense stuff.

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for updaing info in WEB. Regarding our community most of the informations are deleted from WEB like Wikipedia.

In your infomations most of the info are not true, like if the Engagement done both bride and groom are not allowed to go out side freely, like to cinema or restaurent.

If possible could you post the verramotti song in Doddu Abba festival ? " Aahaha Bribraku, Ananda Bribraku, Loga Matha Bribaraku " song, and the mandra during mankalya dhana time. it will end with " AArasadha".

As such there are no tamil devangas, only kannada devangas living in Tamilnadu. As of now our Jagathguru is Sri Sri Dayanandapuri Swamigalu, of Hampi hemakoota Gayathri peeta. Like Sankara madam we have 5 gayatri peetas all over India. One is hampi peeta other are located at Kasi, Sonasalam, srisailam and elsewhere. We say "Aththu savare kula" ie we have 10000 thegai. Please track your kula deivam temple and worship. Let us be united. We have Sowdeswari Narpani Manram which is having associations in almost all towns in Tamilnadu. We have a Gayathri Peetam at Thirumoorthimalai, where our people can visit and show our unity and solidarity to our community.

If people ar intersetd I can give some more information on our community.

A good initiative taken to track the origin of our community. it is indeed interesting to know our history. good piece of information about the distribution of our community. However,it is very much unclear, where the migration started, is it from ujjain or Hampi or mysore ? anyhow, being in tamil nadu for more than a half century, we are more tamils than a kannadiga, though the language we speak is of so called kannada.
I request the readers of this site, to either discuss more on historical backgrounds to determine the origin or do some social awareness, rather than narrowing down to community level. for matrimony, we have narpani mandrams in abundant.
Or..a common platform to discuss general views. plz do not promote castism even by mistake. Last, but least, my sincere appreciation for the effort for this website hosting person for his noble endeavour.regards: Elan.m (manickelan@yahoo.com)

Good information on our history.
Me and my brother published a very small book on the occasion of our Chowdambigahi temple Kumbabisekam, at Sithayankottai - Dindigul D.T., about the history of our Devangar Kulam. where we have collected and presented lot of Tegai-Kulam.
we will try to get it scanned and attach with this story.

I am doing research on Prime weaving communities of tamilnadu esp Sengundars, Devangars (as mentioned in recent GO) and Saurashtras. my ancestors lived in central part of India belonging to paramara dynasty. About 1450 AD, Devanga by name belongs to the dynasty ruled of a while. but a number of sources reveal that we have close association with Padma sale. The Selam Devangars alone insist that they were coming from Ujjain. In my childhood i came accross the fact that, according to Sowdeswari Malar, our ancestors migrated from Nepal. if any body have palm leaves, manuscripts, inscriptional evidences, and ballads pl. contact me to this mail.

Worthwhile attempt. It is very important to know our cultural identity. We will never be respected in the society if we do not know our roots.

It's time that we all take interest and contribute our efforts in knowing more about our community, its customs, rituals so that we our future generation will be saved from extinction.
