Joshua Harris (born 1972 - August 30, 2008) was an United States Navy SEAL. He was an operator in the Naval Special Warfare Development Group and the 512th U.S. service member to die in Afghanistan.
Early life Josh Harris was raised on his family's dairy farm outside Lexington, North Carolina. Harris was a talented All County and All Conference linebacker at Lexington High School and graduated in 1990.
Harris went on to Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, as a Studio Art major. He studied art in Prague as part of a college exchange, and later returned to the eastern European city on his own to study further before enlisting in the military. Harris then pursued a Masters Degree in Architecture.
On August 23, 2000 Josh Harris gave up his art career and enlisted in the United States Navy.
Military Service After completing Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, Harris reported to (BUD/S) training in Coronado, California. Upon graduating from BUD/S Harris completed an additional five months of before reporting to his first permanent duty station at SEAL Team Ten.
He was sent on several combat deployments to Iraq with SEAL Team Ten. Harris distinguished himself during these deployments to Iraq. On May 26, 2006, Harris transferred from SEAL Team Ten and began the demanding selection and training program at Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU). Harris completed the arduous training during the selection program and received orders to the Development Group as a member of Naval Special Warfare Tactical Development and Evaluation Squadron (NSWTACDEVRON) Two.
Harris was forward deployed with DEVGRU somewhere in Afghanistan. During combat operations Harris drowned after being swept away by turbulent waters while attempting to cross a river in Afghanistan.[
