Josephine "Jo" Fahey (née Coughlan) is a fictional character on the Irish soap opera Fair City. The character is portrayed by Rachel Sarah Murphy.
About Jo
Jo arrived in Carrigstown in 2000 as a friend of Mags Kelly. The two locked themselves in the local library to try and stop it from being turned into a block of apartments. They lost the battle but Mags introduced Jo to her future husband, Dermot Fahey.
Dermot and Jo had a strong relationship and it wasn't long before Dermot was proposing to Jo. However Jo turned him down and revealed there was a strong possibility she could have Huntingtons Disease. Dermot swore to stand by her but Jo was too scared to get tested.
Jo was happy when her sister, Eleanor came to stay but was shocked when she revealed that she had Huntingtons. Jo finally took the tests which proved she didn't have the disease. Jo finally agreed to marry Dermot.
Soon after she married Dermot, Jo got a call saying her sister's health was deteriorating. Jo flew out to Mozambique in order to be with her sister for her final few days.
Upon her return, Jo was forced to deliver her friend Heather Daly's baby. Jo was delighted when Heather revealed she wanted to name her baby daughter after Jo's sister.
The experience made Jo long for a baby of her own but she was horrified to learn that she couldn't have children. Jo started to look at adopting when she met the lonely and pregnant Deirdre Burke. Deirdre had a baby boy and she named him Benjamin. Jo was confused when Deirdre left Ben with her and never returned. She later found a letter where Deirdre explained that she had put Dermot down as the father on the birth certificate and wanted the pair to raise Benjamin as their own.
Jo was ecstatic that they had been given this chance and convinced a reluctant Dermot to keep the baby.
Deirdre returned at Christmas but assured the couple that she was happy with the current situation.
In 2007, Deirdre returned permanently. In 2008, following Deidre delivering a stillborn baby, she took Benjamin back. This created heartbreak for Jo who had grown to love him as her own. Deirdre eventually brought him back to her. During the controversy, Jo discovered that Brendan Daly is the biological father. She blackmailed him to sign the legal adoption papers saying she wouldn't tell Heather. Heather found out eventually anyway.
By April, Barry O'Hanlon found out and was interested in writing an article. Jo was against his idea as she feared it might ruin Dermot's career. Soon they were being asked to do an interview for television and they accepted. However, Jo was angered by the questions being asked so she lashed out at the interviewer.
