Jesus with erection

Jesus with erection is a controversial satirical cartoon published in the March 2006 issue of the Student Insurgent, a student newspaper at University of Oregon.
The cartoon featured a hand-drawn depiction of a naked Jesus on the Cross with an erection. There were eleven additional hand-drawn cartoons of Jesus, among them an image titled Resurrection, showed a naked Jesus kissing the devil, both sporting erections. The students said they drew it after the controversial Muhammad cartoons earlier published in Europe that sparked Muslim riots worldwide. The students claimed that the drawings should "provoke dialogue," especially in regards to equivalent religious imagery taboos between Christianity and Islam.
As a response to the publishing of the cartoons, several groups demanded a public apology of the students or a defunding of the student newspaper. The president of the Catholic League, William Donohue, said that the president of the University of Oregon, Dave Frohnmayer, had been unresponsive to complaints about the drawings.
In his words, the Jesus with erection "was one of the most obscene assaults on Christianity I have ever seen". News and commentary outlets including The O'Reilly Factor called for the firing of the University's President David B. Frohnmayer.
On the other side, the Oregon Daily Emerald and the Oregon Commentator, two university founded newspapers, publicly defended the right of the student editors of the Insurgent to free speech and also defended Frohnmayer's decision to uphold the controversial student newspaper, citing Board of Regents of Univ. of Wis. System v. Southworth, a 2001 US Supreme Court decision., it censored the Jesus cartoon.
