Jerry St.Clair

Jerry St.Clair or Jerry 'the saint' St. Clair is the stage name of a fictional compere and singer in the UK sitcom Phoenix Nights. He is played by comedian Dave Spikey who also co-wrote the series.

Jerry originally appeared in That Peter Kay Thing in the episode 'The Club' which later became the sitcom Phoenix Nights. It is revealed he is a former builder who turned to showbiz after winning a major regional talent show 'Talent Trek' in 1992. Jerry St.Clair is a stage name, the character's real name is Jerry Dignan, which is occasionally referred to in situations outside of the club. He is seen as the fall guy of the series, and receives more than his fair share of bad luck across the series, including a cancer scare, being scalded and burnt and receiving some amusing side effects from herbal medication.

Jerry is a close friend of Phoenix club proprietor Brian Potter, and is part of the club's organising committee. Quite often Jerry is horrified and shows great opposition to Potter's thrifty ways, especially when it comes to Potter cutting corners in the running of the club.

In the second series of the club, Jerry's role as a fall guy is further shown. When the Phoenix Club is destroyed by arson and goes out of business, he is forced to find work in his local ASDA supermarket, where he is employed as a singing 'greeter'.

Potter persuades him to rejoin the Phoenix Club, and take charge as licencee. But this is shown as a sham across the series, when it becomes apparent that Potter still has true control of the club, and is using Jerry as licencee to satisfy the local authorities. However, the story takes a twist in the final episode when Potter is offered the chance to have his licence back, but feels that Jerry should stay as he has done a good job.
