Jeroni Nadal

Jeroni Nadal is a senior eye surgeon and head of the Macular Unit of the Vitreo-Retinal Department at Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, Barcelona. He has developed surgical procedures and techniques in the field of vitreo retinal ophthalmology and in 2015, performed Europe's first retinal implant operation on a patient with Usher syndrome.
Life and career
Jeroni Nadal was born in Binissalem, Mallorca (Spain). At the age of 17, he moved to Barcelona, to begin his medical studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain where he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1984. Nadal completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre, Barcelona in 1989 followed by a two-year fellowship in Retina.

In 2000, Jeroni Nadal was appointed chief surgeon and coordinator of Barraquer's Macular Unit where he is also responsible for the training of resident doctors and coordination of doctorate courses run by the Barraquer University Institute of which he is also a member of the Governing Board.
Jeroni Nadal is a member of several national and foreign associations including the European Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Association for Vision and Eye Research (EVER), the Pan-American Society of Ophthalmology, the European Vitreo-Retinal Society and the French Society of Ophthalmology.
Surgery
To date, (2015), Jeroni Nadal has developed surgical techniques in the fields of retinal detachment, dislocated IOLs, retinal vascular surgery, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole surgery and hypotony maculopathy.
In 2013, Nadal was chosen by the company Second Sight (USA), as the first specialist in Spain to perform retinal implant surgery using the company's Argus II retinal implant. This implant, also known as "bionic eye" provides electrical stimulation of the retina to increase visual awareness in blind people enabling patients to identify objects, shapes, contours and movements.
In June 2014, Nadal carried out Spain's first retinal implant operation at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center, Barcelona on a patient with hereditary retinal degeneration caused by retinitis pigmentosa.
On 15 December 2015, Nadal performed Europe's first retinal implant operation on a patient with Usher syndrome, a disorder that causes deafness and blindness and completely isolates the sufferer who is only able to communicate through an interpreter and sign language. The patient was the second in the world to receive this treatment.
