James (Jim) Turk is a Canadian author, progressive activist, union organiser and professor. He is currently the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT).
Turk earned his A.B. from Harvard University, M.A. from the University of California at Berkley and PhD from the University of Toronto. He was a Knox Fellow at Cambridge University.
Turk taught at the University of Toronto from 1970 - 1989, and later was Research Director for the United Electrical Workers, Director of Education for the Ontario Federation of Labour, and Executive Assistant to the President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees CUPE. He has held his post at CAUT since 1997.
Turk is a member of the Executive and Board of the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives. Previously he has been President of the Ontario New Democratic Party from 1974-76. In 1995-1996, Turk was instrumental in organizing the Ontario Days of Action and he was co-chair of the Ontario Coalition of Social Justice for nine years.
He has published a number of articles and books. He is frequently quoted in newspaper articles on topics related to post-secondary education and speaks regularly at conferences.
