James Ferron was one of the 4 Volunteers of the Old IRA who were drowned on active service with the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of Independence. They were making their way by boat from Carna to Roundstone for a Battalion meeting, when they were caught by a violent storm and drowned of the shore of Inishlaken Island. Patrick Folan, James Ferron, Joseph Greene and Joseph Keeley were members of the West Connemara Brigade, and were carrying despatches and money collected in Carna to the meeting. They were from Carna, and their next of kin received compensation from the Irish Free State government. Footnotes and References
