Islamic Research Academy

The Islamic Research Academy (ISRA) is an Academy established for the Study of Islamicjerusalem. It was founded to mark the 1400th anniversary of the Muslim conquest of Islamicjerusalem by the second Caliph ('Umar Ibn al-Khattab) in 16 AH (637 AD). The Academy was established by the Arab-British Historian Professor Abd al-Fattah El-Awaisi in 1994 in London. The Academy became recognised as a charity since June 1996. It holds various activities, such as conferences, workshops and exhibitions on Islamicjerusalem.

Scholarships
ISRA since its establishment has sponsored tens of students to complete PhD research on Islamicjerusalem at British Universities. Shaikh has been the main sponsor for the Academy from the year 2000 and with the establishment of the Al-Maktoum Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Scotland, much of the work has been focused on Islamicjerusalem. Through which a Master (MLitt) and PhD programmes in Islamicjerusalem was developed with the University of Aberdeen. ISRA continues to sponsors numerous students on a yearly basis for the one year MLitt programme.

Conferences
ISRA has held various international conferences on Islamicjerusalem since 1997, bringing various international renowned speakers, such as Shaikh Yusef al-Qaradawi, Karen Armstrong, Shaikh Muhammad Said Ramadan al-Buti, Kenneth Cragg, Shaikh Wahba Al-Zuhayli, Mark Hoyle, Mohamed Saleem El-Awa amongst others. After the establishment of the 'Centre for Islamicjerusalem Studies' at the Al-Maktoum Institute in Scotland, ISRA handed over the organisation of these conferences to the centre and have since organised a further five conferences.

Publications
ISRA has published various book and monographs on Islamicjerusalem, as well as the . ISRA has published seven issues of the Journal of Islamic Jerusalem Studies before handing over the publication to . Also artistic works of calligraphy and photographic exhibitions were commissioned and printed.

Awards
To encourage scholars and researchers ISRA has introduced various prizes and Awards, such as al-Maqdisi Award given to prominent scholars who have served the filed, the First was given to Shaikh Ra'id Salah and the second to Professor El-Awaisi after he resigned his post as the Secretary General of the Academy. ISRA has given a further five awards to young scholars for their contributions to the field.
