Industrial Electronic Repair is a concept similar to consumer electronic repair but the main focus is working on factory automation equipment, machine tool electronics and process automation instead of common consumer items. This industry started in the 1970s when factory electronic automation began to change from relay logic to solid state programmable controllers, dc drives, robotics, welders, distributed control systems and a host of other new electronic automation devices. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) either started to move away from repair of their own items or had a reputation of wanting to replace with new rather than offer fast and economical repair service. This opened up the field for entrepreneurs to start third party repair services and led to the emergence of an entire industrial electronics service industry. Locations In the early days (1976 to 1986) the primary geographic locations for this industry in the United States were in Michigan - near Detroit - and in Central North Carolina (Greensboro). Today these two regions host a vibrant group of companies involved in the industry. Size These early companies fall into two distinct groups - the less than 10 person "basement" variety and those with over 100 employees. In addition, with the advent of the internet, there is now also a group of Repair reps who appear to be a repair facility but indeed are only outsourcing their work.
