Ignacio del Rio

Ignacio del Rio, born in Burgos, Spain in 1936, is a painter, cartoonist and illustrator. By the age of 14 he had already began his artistic career and at 16 years old he decided to move to Paris, where he studied at L’Ecole des Beuax Arts
There he met and befriended Pablo Picasso and together they collaborated in the exhibition of Spanish Painters in Paris.
He has had many exhibitions all over the world including France, Jamaica, the Netherlands, Greece, the United States, Canada, Venezuela, Morocco,
Switzerland, and almost every major city in Spain.
At 77 years old, he still creating and exhibiting. His training and experiences are captured in each stroke of his paintings .
Today his works are present in numerous museums, foundations, companies and private collections worldwide.
Biography
Ignacio del Rio was born in 1936, in Burgos, Spain. In 1950, after finishing grade school, he began work as a telephone operator and later as an apprentice drafter in the Gimenez Cuende Foundation., while taking art classes at night. His teacher, Rigoberto Arce knew then that Ignacio had much potential and loved his work.
In 1953, he won first prize in a regional art competition and had his first exhibit in one of the main cultural buildings of Burgos, the Teatro Principal. His talent was quickly recognized and he won a scholarship to study in L’Ecole des Beuax Arts in Paris. Paris was, at the age of 17, his paradise for artistic learning and experiences. He spent his time exploring the city untiringly, reading, painting, and dreaming. It was there that he met Rafael Alberti, Marie Teresa Leon, and the widow of Miguel Angel Asturias. He befriended Pablo Picasso, whom he worked with in the Collective Exhibit of Spanish Artists in Paris in homage to Antonio Machado. He took a trip back to Burgos for his second exhibit in the Teatro Principal, and was met with much acclaim and again in 1955 with a more abstract collection. However, post-war Spain left Ignacio with a strong desire to travel and with that he left for the Americas.
In 1957, he arrived in Trujillo, now Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he worked roulette tables and boxed to make ends met until he began to work with Jose Vela Zanetti on a giant mural for the Jornadas de Confraternizacion del Mundo Libre.
He had a very successful exhibit in the Galería La Casa de Ayer y de Hoy and returned to Spain for his fourth exhibition in Burgos, Teatro Principal He began to travel around Spain and the rest of Europe, showing his art in major cites such as Mallorca, Barcelona, Madrid. Faced with compulsory service in the Spanish Armed Forces, he volunteered, allowing him to choose his destination freely. He spent his service in Palma de Mallorca. He later lived briefly in the Netherlands, before returning to Mallorca, where he married his first wife and after having their first child, relocating to Paris. There, in 1959, he had an exhibit in the Galérie Les Deux Ponts and another in Le Foyer des Etudients.
In 1964, Ignacio met Susanne Crews and together they visited Madrid, Burgos, Paris, Turkey, Istanbul, and Italy. During a few months they lived in Athens, until they moved to Sitia, Greece for proximately one year. During that time he had an exposition in the Teodocopulus Gallery in Athens and the Cristos Gallery in Heraklion.
In 1965 he won first prize in the Premio de Pintura de la Diputación Provincial de Burgos.
In 1966 he returned to Spain and had an exhibition in Tossa de Mar, Gerona. He won the International Art Contest. The city hall bought several of his works and offered him a job as director of the cities Art and Drawing School that was being formed, but he declined and promptly moved to the United States with Susanne.
In 1967, he lived in California before moving to Montreal. He had various exhibits, including in the Russell Gallery in San Francisco, the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, La Cienega Gallery in Los Angeles, the Sala Art Nouveau in Montreal and in Toronto.
In 1968, he had a showing in the Sala Amando Reveron in Venezuela before returning to Burgos. There he built a permanent gallery just outside of the city, in Ubierna and in 1970 began the Summer Festival of Poetry, Art and Theatre of Ubierna. He traveled Spain with his art until moving briefly to Turkey in 1982.
In 1985 he had an exposition in the Casa Cultura of Ronda, Malaga, Spain. A year later he had another in L'Association Les Amis du FRAC Aquitaine in Bordeaux and in the Exposition des artistes de Burgos, Pessac, France and two more in Spain.
In 1991 he was selected in the 6th National BMW Art Contest in Madrid. He later traveled and had showings in Switzerland, France, and throughout Spain including the in Madrid, in the Galería Rembrant in Bilbao, in the Galería Studium in Valladolid, in the Sala Pallares in Leon and in the Galeria Expo in San Sebastian.
In 1992, he was selected in the 7th National BMW Art Contest and had expositions in the Palacio Gaviria and in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid and in the Consulado del Mar in Burgos.
In 1993 he had an exhibit in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and in in the Galeria de Arte Figuras in Colombia and was also invited to the 10th Salón de las Artes de Blanquefort in France.
In 1996 he was a finalist in the 1st Premio Caneja de Pintura in Ateneo Gallery, in Madrid and shortly after treveled to Egypt and Colombia.
In 1999 he had an exhibit in the Circulo de Bellas Artes, Valencia, Spain. Since 1990 he has had yearly exhibits in the days leading up to Christmas in the Arco de Santa Maria in Burgos.
To date, Ignacio del Rio continues to paint and exhibit his art, which can be found in numerous museums, foundations, companies and with private collectors worldwide.
