IGGY Summer U

IGGY Summer U Programme

The IGGY (International Gateway for Gifted Youth, led by the University of Warwick in Coventry, England) Summer U programme has many similarities with the well-known NAGTY Summer Schools, also organised by the University of Warwick (although hosted by many different universities across England). It was originally meant to be fully launched in 2009, but on the 22nd April 2008 IGGY decided to host a single two-week residential course open to students between 11 and 18 from across the globe on its own campus.

The IGGY Summer U is open to all students between the ages of 11-16, with provision for older students (17-18) to take extra responsibility as Junior Mentors. Although not funded by any government, IGGY offers bursaries and even free places to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

IGGY Summer U 2008

The IGGY Summer U programme was launched a year earlier than had been previously planned, on the 22nd April 2008. It took place between 27th July and 9th August in the University of Warwick campus, and saw 106 students from 12 different countries across the globe.
Unverified sources claim that there were over 2000 applicants to the Summer U.

Courses

The courses were as follows:

* Creative Writing and Comparative Culture
* The World of Mathematics: Solving Global Issues Through Mathematics
* Medical Sciences
* Enterprise: Global Young Entrepreneurs

Programme

Alongside the academic programmes, there were many internationally-themed and cultural excursions and activities, such as an Asian Night, a Merry England workshop and visits to Warwick Castle.

This social and cultural programme looks set to be the basis for all extra-curricular activities in future Summer Us.

Winter U

IGGY is also launching a 'Winter U' programme that will begin in December 2008. No dates or venues have been given, although Ken Sloan, the founder of IGGY, recently announced that he had travelled to Singapore in the hope of hosting the event there.

Plans for 2009

IGGY originally planned to introduce its full Summer and Winter U programmes in 2009. However, Ken Sloan, the founder of IGGY decided to introduce a single event in 2008 and launch the full international programme in 2009. No dates or venues have yet been set or announced, but IGGY has stated that people will be able to sign up between December 2008 and February 2009. Unverified sources have claimed that there will be events in Canada and Hong Kong.
