ICT segment and specialisms model

The Segment and specialisms model was created by Accredit UK and modified by for use on their web platform. (Wmhive was called Awmist until November 2010).
The model was achieved by segmenting the ICT sector into nine individual groups which, it is hoped, encompass the whole ICT industry. This has been done through analysis of the market and existing segmentation of UK markets. The following segments have been identified as key industry areas within the industry. Each segment then has specialisms, they will have a high degree of similarity in their requirements, yet be distinct from the rest of the market.
<big>ICT Consultancy</big>
:This segment includes all ICT suppliers that provide consultancy expertise within the ICT industry. This includes all specific ICT consultancy specialism. This can include the provision of advice and assistance to business and other organisations on management issues that are related to the ICT industry. This may include advice on specific ICT projects and any membership organisations or business services, for example IT recruitment.
<big>Hardware Consultancy</big>
:This specialism includes the planning and designing of computer hardware specifically. Exclusive of this specialism will be companies that offer hardware installation, specialism 19.
<big>IT Consultancy</big>
:Information technology consulting is the specialiam that includes businesses that focus on advising businesses on how best to use information technology to meet their business objectives. This specialism will also include IT membership organisations, IT specific recrutiment agencies and other service businesses that offer IT specific departments.
<big>IT Training</big>
:IT Training includes all businesses that offer training services related to specifics of IT. This can include training on systems, hardware or software.
<big>Relational Database Management</big>
:All businesses that deal with consultancy around relational database management systems, and programmes that create, update, and administer a relational database.
<big>Security Consultancy</big>
:Specialisms that include consultancy on IT security services. Including security policy and design, risk management, security standards, disaster recovery, authentication, data protection and governance.
<big>Software Consultancy</big>
:Businesses that deal in software consultancy, offering consultancy to businesses to identify software needs to meet specifications. This does not include the production of the software, which will be covered in specialism 8.
<big>Telecommunication Consultancy</big>
:This specialism will include businesses that offer all telecommunication consultancy services, including implementation, data and voice networking, IP convergence in addition to mobile and video communications. The services cover requirement identification, design, development; implementation, integration, and training.
<big>Software Product Design & Development</big>
This segment includes the process of designing software and the development of software including testing. Software
design is the process of planning for a software solution that meets an identified market or business need or opportunity.
It involves investigating specific individual or business needs and researching how best to meet the stated goal(s)
through the design of the software solution.
Software development is the translation of the software design into a software product encompassing testing.
<big>Packaged Software Design & Development</big>
This specialism will include businesses that develop user needs into a software product. This subclass also includes the
development, production, supply and documentation of ready-made interactive leisure and entertainment software, such
as games software, designed for publication by a different enterprise.
<big>Bespoke Application Design & Development</big>
This specialisim covers the design and development of bespoke desktop applications. Application development refers to
the developing of programming applications. Suppliers with this specialism may include solution identification, design,
development, implementation, migration, integration and security; user training, maintenance and support, or managed
and application service provider (ASP) service, for a range of applications.
<big>Testing</big>
Software testing businesses offer the specialism in the processes used to measure the quality of developed computer
software.
<big>Solutions Design, Integration & Deployment</big>
This segment includes the planning and design of a business solution that integrates computer hardware with
communications technologies and applications using existing available commercial applications. This segment may
include the customisation and interface design to other applications.
<big>Business Applications Integration</big>
Specialisms that include the integration of bespoke business applications across businesses for example CRM solutions,
ERP Solutions, and Electronic Document and Management Solutions.
<big>Business Solutions Application - Deployment</big>
Specialisms that include the deployment of bespoke business applications across businesses for example CRM
solutions, ERP Solutions, and Electronic Document and Management Solutions.
<big>Enterprise Resource Planning Solutions</big>
Provides for single application solutions which may include solution identification, design, development,
implementation, migration, integration and security; user training, maintenance and support or managed and application
service provider (ASP) service as part of a wider solution.
<big>Hardware Installation</big>
Businesses that specialise in the installation of IT hardware including systems and applications.
<big>IT Helpdesks and Managed Desktop Solutions</big>
Managed Desktop Solutions are service contracts to include, the provision, maintenance and repair of Desktop PCs.
Helpdesk facilities include both on and off-site support arrangements and individual maintenance contracts. All of these
can be delivered as a simple service contract, a managed service or as a fully outsourced operation.
<big>Communications</big>
This segment covers all telecommunication suppliers. Information Communication Technology is grouped together for
obvious reasons, but for the purposes of segmenting the market it is viable that telecommunications has its own
segment. This segment includes telecommunication equipment, network cabling, telecommunication services, and
wireless telecommunications.
<big>Convergent Solutions</big>
This specialism provides for a solution that requires a combination of communication services and technologies.
Included are digitally converged solutions that combine telecoms, IT, broadcasting and multicasting, content
distribution, application service including control systems to enable business to take advantage of user device
independence and the other benefits that convergent, integrated services offer.
<big>Data Solutions</big>
This specialism offers organisational level solutions for wired and wireless data transmission services in a range of
formats including IP, where there is no Voice Solution being procured; for example IT infrastructure.
<big>Internet Service Provision</big>
An Internet service provision is a business that provides access to the Internet. This excludes web hosting, which is
provided within specialism 41.
<big>Mobile & Wireless</big>
This specialism is to for businesses to an end to end mobility solution, part of which may include the integration of
fixed and mobile telephony.
<big>Network Design & Installation</big>
This specialism covers the design, optimisation and implementation of new and existing ICT systems covering the
design, definition and installation of physical IT structures - servers and networks required to support business
applications.
<big>Voice Solutions</big>
This specialism includes, businesses that deliver; analogue telephony; digital telephony; messaging services including
unified messaging, VOIP and Centrex services, managed voice solutions; leased lines and cabling audio conferencing.
All the components necessary to build a bespoke voice solution are included. Solutions within this category can also
include the provision of mobile and broadband technologies as part of a complete solution, though for a pure or
majority mobile voice solution, the Mobile & Wireless specialism should be used.
<big>ICT Goods Manufacturing & Repair</big>
This segment includes the manufacture and repair of computers, hardware, voice hardware equipment, and similar
electronic products, as well as the manufacture and repair of components for such products. Included in this class are
segment specialisms such as computer and peripheral manufacturers.
<big>Computer Hardware Manufacture</big>
Businesses in this specialism will manufacture computer hardware, the physical part of a computer, including the digital
circuitry, not including computer software (specialism 8) that executes within the hardware. The hardware of a
computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data. For example PCs, laptops, PDAs. manufacturer is a supplier who manufacturers their own products and then sells them direct to customers.
<big>Computer Hardware Repair</big>
Businesses in this specialism will repair computer hardware, the physical part of a computer, including the digital
circuitry, not including computer software (specialism 8).
<big>Computer Peripherals & Consumables</big>
This specialism is for businesses that manufacture and repair computer peripherals and consumables. Computer
consumables include toner cartridges, printer inks, magnetic media (not software), ICT cleaning products, mouse-mats,
cables, foot-rests, arm-rests, for example. Computer peripherals include printers and scanners.
<big>Network Hardware Manufacture</big>
Businesses in this specialism will manufacture network hardware equipment to facilitate the use of a computer network
such as servers and equipment - including mainframes, switches, servers, LAN and WAN equipment, access points,
network interface cards and hubs.
<big>Network Hardware Repair</big>
Businesses in this specialism will repair network hardware equipment to facilitate the use of a computer network such
as servers and equipment - including mainframes, switches, servers, LAN and WAN equipment, access points, network
interface cards and hubs.
<big>Voice Hardware Manufacture</big>
Businesses in this specialism will manufacture voice hardware equipment to facilitate the use of voice communications
such as analogue telephony; digital telephony; messaging services including unified messaging, VOIP and cabling
audio conferencing.
<big>Voice Hardware Repair</big>
Businesses in this specialism will repair voice hardware equipment to facilitate the use of voice communications such as
analogue telephony; digital telephony; messaging services including unified messaging, VOIP and cabling audio
conferencing.
<big>Wholesale, Trade & Distribution</big>
This segment is for businesses within the ICT industry that specialise with the distribution and selling within ICT. The
businesses that would sit within this segment would include leasing companies and wholesale companies that supply the
industry such as computer leasing and rental, and resellers of ICT equipment.
<big>Computer Leasing & Rental</big>
This specialism is for businesses that offer computers on a leasing or rental agreement. This can include PCs, laptops
and associated peripherals.
<big>Reseller</big>
A reseller is a supplier who sells products from a varying range of manufacturers. If a manufacturer of their own
products also sells similar products from other manufacturers, they can be considered to be a reseller.
<big>Value Added Reseller</big>
A value-added reseller is a business that adds some features to an existing product or products, then resells it as an
integrated product or complete solution, for example, a software application might be added to existing hardware,
therefore added value above the cost of the individual computer components.
<big>New Media & e-Commerce</big>
It could be argued that this is a segment that could sit under a number of the other segments. However with the recent
Internet and e-commerce boom it is important to recognise new media and e-commerce in its own right. This segment
includes specialisms that are primarily with web based applications.
<big>Web Applications</big>
Businesses in this specialism will produce and supply web application, an application that is accessed via web over a
network such as the Internet or an intranet. Web applications are used to implement webmail, online auctions,
discussion boards, blogs, and many other web based functions. This specialism includes web development, a broad term
for any activities related to developing a website and the non-design aspects of building websites. This specialism
excludes online retail sales which sit in specialism 40.
<big>Content Management Solutions</big>
Content Management Solution specialism is for businesses that produce content management solutions. This includes
computer files, image media, audio files, electronic documents and web content. A Content Management System can
also be used as to archive as well.
<big>Digital & Multimedia Solutions</big>
Businesses in this specialism will offer services to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated
way.
<big>e-Transaction Solutions</big>
e-Transaction Solutions consist of the distributing, buying, selling, marketing and servicing of products or services over
electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. It can involve electronic funds transfer, supply
chain management, e-marketing, online marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI),
automated inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.
<big>Internet Providers & Web Hosting Solutions</big>
This specialism is for service providers offering web hosting and associated services where initial or further
development of a site is not required. An Internet service provider is a business that provides access to the Internet.
<big>Web Design</big>
The web design specialism covers businesses that design and presentation of content shown on the Internet in the form
of Web sites and other web applications using many different forms of media. This specialism excludes Web
development, web applications, and server security.
<big>Information Assurance</big>
Information Assurance Segment is the practice of managing information-related risks. Specialisms will seek to protect
the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and their delivery systems, whether the data are in storage or
processing, and whether threatened by malice or accident. The segment also relates to information security.
<big>Data Recovery</big>
Data recovery specialism covers businesses that offer the service of the salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted or
inaccessible primary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally.
<big>Disaster Recovery</big>
This specialism is for businesses that offer services in regaining access to hardware and software to resume critical
business operations after a natural or human-induced disaster, excluding data which is covered in specialism 43. This
group will also include businesses that offer Business Continuity Planning services.
<big>Data Management, Utilities and Storage</big>
Data management specialism comprises all the businesses related to managing data as a resource. Businesses that cover
data management include data analysis, data modelling, database administration, data warehousing, data movement, data
mining, data quality assurance and data architecture, file and disk management, File compression, File Transfer Protocol
(FTP) tools, imaging software and CD/DVD copying.
<big>Security Software</big>
Software products that specifically offer security, including Antivirus, Firewall, Intrusion detection and protection
systems, Content Filtering and Spam prevention.
<big>System Security & Back Up</big>
This specialism is for businesses that offer specific products, excluding software, for system security and system back up.
<big>Information & Broadcast Services</big>
Information and broadcast services is a grouping that incorporates the broadcast industries that are classified within ICT.
This will include motion picture, video and television programme activities, radio and television broadcasting and the
publishing of books, newspapers and journals.
<big>Data Information Services</big>
Businesses in this specialism offer data services such as the provision of data and data analysis. In addition business
intelligence services, the applications and technologies which are used to gather, provide access to, and analyze data
and information about company operations.
<big>Desktop Publishing</big>
This specialism is for suppliers that offer desktop publishing services and desktop publishing software skills.
45 Information
<big>Information Service Activities</big>
This group includes the activities of news agencies and all other remaining information service activities. For example,
News agency activities including news syndicate and news agency activities furnishing news, pictures and features to
the media.
<big>Programming & Broadcast Activities</big>
This specialism includes the activities of creating content or acquiring the right to distribute content and subsequently
broadcasting that content, such as radio, television and data programmes of entertainment, news, talk, and the like. Also
included is data broadcasting, typically integrated with radio or TV broadcasting. The broadcasting can be performed
using different technologies, over-the-air, via satellite, via a cable network or via internet.
