History
This edition was started in December 2003. It has articles, having reached 40,000 articles on November 16th 2015, which was Icelandic Language Day.
In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Icelandic December 5, 2013, a seminar was held at the National Library of Iceland. At the event, 30 photographs taken at the 1949 Austurvöllur riots that had not previously been seen by the public were scanned from the National Archives of Iceland and posted on Wikimedia Commons.
From its establishment in December 2003 until November 2005, growth of the Icelandic was relatively slow. In November 2005, articles on over 3,500 Icelandic personal names were mechanically added. In May 2006, the number of distinct articles reached 10,000. After that, growth was faster and the number of articles reached 20,000 in February 2008 and 30,000 in November 2010. Growth has since slowed down and, having reached 40,000 articles in 2015, the total was below 42,000 as of January 2017.
