HydraIRC

HydraIRC is an Internet Relay Chat client for Windows created in 2002 and developed by Dominic Clifton. It is loosely based on the design of Bersirc.
The client has been popularised by its quirky quit messages.
Development
HydraIRC started as a personal project in June 2002, but was released to the public after six months of development.
HydraIRC is coded in and uses the Windows Template Library. Patches are accepted and approved only by Clifton.
The client is released under a non-OSI approved "limited-use source" license. As of January 19, 2009 the author has granted anonymous Subversion repository access, with the intention of generating renewed interest in the project.
Criticism
Random promotional quit messages are used by default when the user disconnects from a server, with no way to disable them. These messages can be manually bypassed by using the /quit command
The choice of license and promotion as "Open Source" software is misleading, because the license is not approved by the Open Source Initiative. The license refuses redistribution of the software, and revokes any contributor's ownership to their code. Some have criticised this choice of license as overly restrictive of the source code, without which development has slowed.
