Hindustan Semiconductor Manucfacturing Corporation ( HSMC ) is an a Silicon Valley-based semiconductor company headquartered in Bangalore,India , that pioneer by setting up a complete Electronic and Semiconductor Eco-System in India. HSMC intends to be a leading independent semiconductor products provider and bring integrated circuit (IC) manufacturing, foundry management and operating services to India. Semiconductor manufacturing in general is a high technology, capital-intensive business that requires a very specialized environment to thrive in and being good is not enough in this survival-only-for-the-fittest industry. Background Hindustan Semiconductor Manucfacturing Corporation (HSMC ) is founded in 2010 by Deven Verma, Raj Singh and Vishal Verma . Deven was Executive Vice President at Loral Corporation and has managed the largest commercial satellite project in the world and Vishal is a member of the The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), AAMA, SVASE, Chicago Private Equity Networks, Chicago CEO Roundtable, Executive Club of Chicago.Raj was among the first few employees at both Cirrus Logic and again at Nexgen. .HSMC has developed a prudent business model to build a viable and competitive foundry model in India that will enable the company to produce impressive results resilient to cyclical movements of the industry. Financial & Funding HSMC intends to be a leading independent semiconductor products provider. HSMC has recently been awarded a $2.2B package from the Govt. of India. Vishal Verma is responsible for HSMC’s finance and day-to-day-operations. Market Opportunity India imported nearly US$7 bn of semiconductors in 2013, based on demand from the telecom mobility, computing and consumer (electronics) segments. Continuing to grow at 14% CAGR and driven by the same growth segments, India’s semiconductor import bill will reach up to US$20 bn by 2020. The GOI forecasts that overall electronics import (semiconductor costs are about 10%-15% of overall equipment costs) could exceed that of crude oil by then. As a result, as part of the recent announcement of “Make in India” program announced by the Honourable PM, this project has been identified as one of national importance with the full support of the Government, including the PMO. There are numerous semiconductor products suited to the Indian market - wireless ICs for cell phones, 3/4G-LTE based stations, Wi-fi, broadband, set top boxes, control systems, broadcasting digitization, automotive electronic products, power generation, PLC Controllers, solar panel control devices, electronic cards, mobile phone SIM cards, citizenship cards, smart cards, e-passports and set top enabler cards. Most of these programs are part of the GOI’s recently announced Digital India and Make in India programs. Semiconductor Manufacturing * Gujarat is expected to be home to India's first semiconductor wafer fabrication manufacturing facility by late 2017 in Prantij of Sabarkantha district. To be set up by anchor partner Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (HSMC) and copartners STMicroelectronics N.V. (France/Italy) and Silterra (Malaysia), it will employ a workforce of over 25,000 including 4,000 direct employees. The group will establish two manufacturing units at an expense of over INR 29,000 crore or about US$4.5 billion, each capable of producing 20,000 wafers per month. Technology nodes currently proposed by this consortium are 90, 65 and 45 nm nodes in Phase I and 45, 28 and 22 nm nodes in Phase II. Corporate Affairs * Chip maker AMD plans to enter Indian electronics sector in a big way and has already tied up with HSMC for chip manufacturing in India. * HSMC Technologies India Pvt in partnership with STMicroelectronics, Europe’s largest semiconductor maker, and Silterra Malaysia Sdn Bhd.The project would cost Rs.29,013 crore and have a capacity of 40,000 WSPM. It would be set up at Prantij in Gujarat.
