International Green Industry Hall of Fame

The International Green Industry Hall of Fame (IGIHOF) is 501(c)3 non-profit organization headquartered in Fresno, California. IGIHOF maintains a list of individuals and organizations around the globe making significant contributions towards ecological sustainability. The stories and technologies from inductees are promoted at an annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony and then cataloged and housed on the web for future reference.

SunRun - SunRun, based in San Francisco, CA, offers homeowners a new way to go solar, by eliminating high upfront costs and selling electricity generated by panels on their customers’ roofs. SunRun specializes in solar leasing and power purchase agreements.
UC Merced - One major goal for UC Merced is to become the greenest campus in the country. As of May 2009: Six campus buildings have earned LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), with a seventh earning LEED Silver and four more buildings under construction or recently completed are expected to achieve LEED Gold No other university in the United States has earned LEED Silver or better for every building on campus. UC Merced’s commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond building practices. Participation in the campus wide recycling program is the norm, not the exception.
Green Apple Horse Network - Green Apple Horse Network, based in Marin County, CA, has news, information and solutions on how to go green in the horse industry. Also, they manage a comprehensive business directory to help individuals easily locate green products and services.
Electronic Recycles International - Electronic Recyclers International based in Fresno, CA, is the nation’s largest electronic waste recycler. ERI recycles over 170 million Pounds annually in 6 U.S. Locations. To date they have the highest capacity and most technologically advanced E-Waste shredding system in North America.
GRID Alternatives - GRID Alternatives based in Oakland, CA, has a mission to empower communities in need by providing renewable energy and energy efficiency services, equipment and training. GRID Alternatives works collaboratively with communities and local organizations to identify specific needs and to develop renewable energy solutions that are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

American Council On Renewal Energy (ACORE) - ACORE works to bring all forms of renewable energy into the mainstream of America’s economy and lifestyle. As a 501(c)3 based in Washington, D.C. ACORE promotes all forms of renewable energy options by empowering industry leaders, publishing collaborative research and facilitating communications among members, their stakeholders and the media. As a member based organization they represent every aspect and sector of the renewable energy industries.
Duke Smart Home Program - The Duke Smart Home program is part of the Duke University, Pratt School of Engineering. The home is a residential dorm and research laboratory that acts as a living laboratory for both undergraduates and graduates, who are focused on sustainable research. The Home allows students to design, create, and implement sustainable answers to our current world.
Grundfos - Grundfos is an international, industrial water pump supplier. They are a global leader and pioneers in delivering cutting-edge green solutions to solve problems such as water shortage, mismanagement of energy and natural resources, and inefficient infrastructure. Additionally, Grundfos, focuses on their carbon footprint and internal sustainability plans with the goal of never to emit more CO2 then they did in 2008.
Josh Dorfman, The Lazy Environmentalist - Using a witty and humorous tone, Mr. Dorfman provides green solutions to businesses, organizations, and individuals. The Lazy Environmentalist is a media brand that includes a TV series, national radio show, books, internet, TV interviews and speaking engagements that showcase green solutions that fit people’s lives, reduce their environmental impact, and accelerate the green economy.
DripTech - Driptech is an international water technologies company that produces affordable, high-quality irrigation systems designed for small-plot farmers that helps to alleviate poverty and increase productivity. Based in Silicon Valley, with offices in Pune and Beijing, the company distributes its products through local governments, corporate partners, and NGOs in India and China. Their product increases crop yields 20-50% and requires less labor and less money spent on diesel or electricity for pumping water.
City of Fresno: Recycling Program - The City of Fresno, California's Solid Waste Division was named as the Nation’s leader in recycling by the “Men’s Health Magazine” recycling survey. The #1 National ranking comes following Fresno being ranked the highest in the state among larger cities by the California Integrated Waste Management Board for diverting 71% of their waste out of the landfill and into the City’s recycling programs. The Fresno Recycling Program is one of the most comprehensive programs in the United States and includes: Recycling Education, Used Motor Oil and Filter program, Bottled Water, Kids Recycling Program, Business and Apartment Recycling Program, CFL and Battery Recycling, Fluorescent Bulb Disposal, Plastics Disposal and Recycling Centers in all the major parks within the City of Fresno.

Alan Tratner - Alan Arthur Tratner helped establish the first Earth Day, served on staff of Environmental Quality magazine, and participated/contributed to the First Int’l United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, Stockholm, Sweden in 1972.He founded the Environmental Education Group(EEG is nonprofit foundation, est.1972).EEG has its core projects the Green2Gold Incubators and Workshops for sustainable economic development,FD3-world helping, responsible solutions, the Small Business Entrepreneurship Center, and the Tech Brew Multidimensional Mega Mixers. Mr.Tratner is president of nonprofit Inventors Workshop Intl (IWI est.1971)and Entrepreneurs Workshop. He is a prolific inventor in renewable energy and transportation, and a serial entrepreneur, and has helped over 100,000 members of Green2Gold and IWI for over 40 years. Alan has conducted over 4,000 workshops, seminars around the globe, from Stanford University to Moscow, Russia. He is a former Professor of Environment and Energy. Alan created and managed the U.S.SBA’s Santa Barbara County Small Business Development Center, and is a SCORE counselor. Alan has been dubbed the “Minister of Ideas” by the media, and has appeared on, and been featured in most of the leading media of our times, from CNN, CNBC, Oprah, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Tomorrow Show, NPR, Wall Street Journal, Time, Business Week, Newsweek, USA Today, Sustainable Industries, Fortune Small Business, INC,etc.,to numerous radio programs, and newspapers. He was co host of nationally syndicated New Venture Money Show and Inventors Workshop of the Air on the Business Radio Network in 90 USA cities.
Mr.Tratner was Editor in Chief of Energies Journal of the Solar Energy Society of America, publisher of the Geothermal Energy Magazine and Geothermal World Directory, was Executive Director of The Geothermal Energy Association, and Green Retailers Association, and was director of the Green Business Conferences, created the first national Eco inventors and Entrepreneurs Workshops, and the New Environmental Technologies Exhibits at Eco Expo’s across America during the 1990s. Alan and Lielle Arad of FD3 conduct The Sustainable Planet and the Total Vantage Point presentations.
Christina Schwerdtfeger - Dr. Christina Schwerdtfeger founded Coto Consulting, Inc. in 2009 as a woman-owned, small business enterprise to provide environmental consulting services to private and public sector clients throughout the United States. Dr. Schwerdtfeger has over 25 years experience as an environmental consultant and has won numerous awards and accolades for her work. She specializes in multi-media compliance for air, water and hazardous waste, with particular emphasis on greenhouse gases and sustainability. Dr. Schwerdtfeger is a published author and invited speaker, as well as an instructor in the Sustainability Business Management and Environmental Management Certificate Programs at University of California, Irvine.
John S. Shegerian - John S. Shegerian is the Chairman and CEO of Electronic Recyclers International® (ERI) (www.electronicrecyclers.com) and ERI’s subsidiary organizations, www.1-800-RECYCLING.com and www.urbanmining.org. Established in 2002, ERI collects and recycles electronic waste, specializing in the sustainable dismantling of consumer electronic items. Under Shegerian’s stewardship, ERI has fast become the largest and most efficient recycler of electronic waste in the world. ERI is licensed to de-manufacture and recycle televisions, computer monitors, computers, and virtually all other types of electronic equipment. ERI developed and houses the largest e-waste crusher in the world and processes more than 120 million pounds of electronic waste annually at its locations in California, Colorado, Indianapolis, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas and Washington.
Shegerian is also co-host of Clear Channel’s “Green is Good” (www.greenisgood.com), the nation’s #1 rated environmentally themed radio program, in which John interviews celebrities, company leaders and green nonprofits regarding environmental issues and opportunities. Guests have included Wal-Mart, FedEx, Hewlett Packard, Verizon, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and many more.
An accomplished public speaker and author, Shegerian’s inspirational memoir, Mandingo and Me will be published in 2014. A Board Member of the American Sustainable Business Council, Shegerian’s columns on the subject of sustainability can be read regularly in Environmental Leader. His talks on sustainability, innovation and the benefits of running a green business have moved and inspired prestige audiences from China, India, and throughout Europe, to the World Bank, United Nations and the White House.
Prior to his work at ERI, Shegerian had co-founded www.financialaid.com, one of the most successful student loan companies in the country. While at financialaid.com, he also created www.rateyourcampus.com (a college student polling and feedback community) which then led to the creation of www.campusdirt.com (which evolved into the most relevant and visited college search engine). Also, www.campusclix.com was created and became one of the first college social networking properties on the web. In October 2004, Shegerian and his partners sold financialaid.com and all the aforementioned affiliated properties to Education Lending Group, which was purchased in February 2005 by CIT (NYSE: CIT).
In 2004, Shegerian created, and still serves as Founder and CEO of Addicted.com, a comprehensive, interactive website dedicated to helping those struggling with the disease of addiction, that has become the leading online space for the recovering community.
For his work with ERI, Shegerian has been named the Clean Tech Entrepreneur of the Year for Northern California by Ernst & Young. He received the “Innovator of the Year” award from the International Electronics Recycling Conference & Expo (IERCE) for his development of 1-800-Recycling.com and its role in democratizing the recycling process nationwide. Shegerian was also named the 2012 recipient of the Harold Zinkin Entrepreneur of the Year Award commemorating a proven track record of leading a business through several years of success. ERI has also won “Recycler of the Year” and the “Industry Pioneer” award from the IERCE.

Ray Anderson - Mr. Anderson is founder and chairman of Interface Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of modular carpet for commercial and residential applications and a leading producer of commercial broadloom and commercial fabrics. He is “known in environmental circles for his advanced and progressive stance on industrial ecology and sustainability.” Since 1995, he has reduced Interface’s waste by a third, and plans to make the company sustainable by 2020. Under his leadership, Interface seeks to reduce and then eliminate “petroleum from its manufacturing processes.” He is pioneering recycling efforts with nylon and polyester which “is recyclable, leading to more closed loop technologies for the future.”
Selection Criteria
Entries for each award category are measured against the following criteria by a panel of independent judges:
# Environmental Benefit: Project, initiative or program should achieve overall environmental benefits. Benefits should be demonstrated through a comparison of the condition before implementation of the project, initiative or program to the condition after implementation using life-cycle analysis, risk analysis or other performance measures determined useful by the applicant.
# Innovation: Project, initiative or program should exhibit innovation in working toward an environmental improvement or solution at a specific location or surrounding community. Examples of innovation include new technologies, methods or information, or innovative methods of implementing or utilizing existing technologies, methods or information.
# Effective Implementation: Project, initiative or program should be effectively implemented in a manner that achieves maximum environmental benefit while cooperating with necessary stakeholders and partners and minimizing time, effort and cost.
# Widespread Applicability: Project, initiative or program should contribute information, technology or techniques that provide an environmental benefit while demonstrating the potential for applicability for others.
# Cost Effectiveness: Project, initiative or program should be cost effective as demonstrated, for example, through cost-benefit analysis, life-cycle costs or other cost comparison technique.
