Hall High School Chess Team

The Hall High School Chess Team is the official representative of Hall High School at team chess tournaments. It is coached by Hall physics teacher Norman Burtness. The team has won the Connecticut state title twice, once in 1973, and again in 2011. Current and former members Current Members The current members of the team are (USCF ratings included): * Daniel Rozovsky (2229) * Kiernan Majerus-Collins (776) * David Dobrynin (713) * David Katz (561) Daniel Rozovsky Daniel Rozovsky is a freshman at Hall High School and is the top player on the school's championship chess team. Rozovsky is a FIDE Master, as well as being a National Master. He is the 15th ranked chess player in the state of Connecticut.He is the 100th ranked junior player in the United States, and the 536th ranked player among all US chess players. Former Members Ben Siegel Ben Siegel (1196 USCF) was a team member for the 2010-2011 school year, competing in all three team tournaments and winning first place among players who were unrated at the team's first tournament of the year. He also took fifth place among those rated under 1200 at Hopkins. Wesley Saxena Wesley Saxena was a team member for the 2010-2011 school year, competing in the New England Scholastic Championships in November and finishing with one win in one game played. Saxena was also instrumental in getting chess started at Hall, serving as the Hall Chess Club's president during his senior (2010-2011) year. Tournaments 2010-2011 The Hall High Chess Team has competed in several tournaments during the 2010-2011 school year, finishing second place at the 7th New England Scholastics. Daniel Rozovsky took second place individual at that tournament, and team members Ben Siegel and Kiernan Majerus-Collins took first and third place unrated respectively. The team also competed at Hopkins. They did not place, though Rozovsky finished 2nd out of Connecticut residents, and fifth overall, in the Open section, and Siegel finished fifth in the Under-1200 section. In May, the team competed at the 2011 K-12 Connecticut State Scholastic Championships, placing first overall, and claiming the title of State Champions. Rozovsky tied for second place overall in the tournament, finishing behind senior Harrison Wheeler (USCF 2260 at the time) by half a point.
