Grindstone Elementary (or known as Berea Elementary) is to be the newest and only elementary school in Berea, Ohio. Construction started in late 2011 or early 2012, was built on the property of the demolished Fairwood Elementary School. History Fairwood Elementary was established in 1950s before Roehm Middle School and was the oldest elementary school in the system. The staff and students, along with the city, had numerous complaints of the structure of the building. Lights shut off and walls molded everywhere. In early 2009, WEWS-TV Channel 5 did a story on the school's closing and how those students would have to drive school buses and carpool to Vivan L. Smith Elementary School and others in the city. The city decided to close Fairwood in September and demolished it on October. The land that was available in between Fairpark Drive and Race street will now be the home of the new school, Grindstone Elementary.<ref name="new" /> Vivian L Smith, Brookview, Parknoll, and Riveredge Elementary closed and Grindstone is now the biggest elementary in the school district, with over 850 students attending.<ref name="new" /> Name Given The Committee of the Berea City School District gave the name, Grindstone Elementary, to connect the new elementary school with the heritage and traditions of the City of Berea, while using the imagery of a grindstone to inspire students to build a foundation for future success. The original Berea grindstones were used to sharpen tools for farms, homes, and industry.
