History Westgarth Primary was founded in 1924 as Westgarth Central School, Number 4177 in the Victorian system. Originally Primary to Year 8, it eventually became primary-only. The original red-brick main building was demolished in the 1991 and a series of new buildings erected in its place. The Brooke Street campus was established in the early 1970s. This site was locally known as Smith's Paddock prior to its annexure by Westgarth Central and was used as a playground by local children. It would play host to a large bonfire on nights with large numbers of local residents gathering to view the fire and fireworks. Nearby landmarks The closest local park to Westgarth Primary School is Johnson Park, one of the finest parks in the Westgarth and Northcote districts. The park is used regularly by teachers and students for school recreational activities.
