Goalferee

GOALFEREE or GOAL-FEREE
The name ' Goalferee' was coined by football ( soccer ) fans in response to the new rules of refereeing brought in by UEFA.
This new ruling now means that there will be a total of 6 match officials: The Referee and 5 assistants. The term is a amalgamation of GOAL and REFEREE.
The first two assistants are the linesmen. Then there is what is commonly referred to as the 4th official whose remit is to assist the referee in other tasks such as the administrative side of the game.
The new-comers are the two assistants whose job it is to stand behind the goal-line and advise the referee should his line of sight be obscured or where a decision was made by the referee which was inaccurate due to the angle he saw it from. It is hoped that this will lead to less contentious decisions and also discourage players falsely claim for penalties by diving to the ground without cause.
The term GOALFEREE was first coined by football fans on the Celtic fans forum www.huddleboard.com and has now come into mainstream use.
Other terms have been invented such as The Goals Mouth ,The Keepers Beeper and Eduardos Enemy. However it is GOALFEREE that has gained more purchase on the terraces.
