Girls Incorporated of Southwestern Connecticut

Girls Incorporated of Southwestern Connecticut (Girls Inc. of SWCT) is an affiliate of the national non-profit organization Girls Incorporated. Through programs offered by a national network of over a hundred affiliates, Girls Inc. aspires to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. To date, Girls Inc. has served over 900,000 girls ages 6-18.
History
Girls Incorporated was established in Waterbury, Connecticut. Girls Inc. of Southwestern Connecticut operates from the building that was the very first Girls Club in the United States established back in 1864. Girls Incorporated of Southwestern Connecticut's service area now spans from Greater Waterbury to Greenwich, Connecticut and includes other Fairfield County cities, Stamford, Norwalk, Weston, and Bridgeport.

Girls Inc. of SWCT is open six days a week during the school year and offers summer and after school programs in safe, girl only "empowerment zones".
National programs offered at Girls Inc. of SWCT are focused on Careers and College Planning, Leadership and Community Action, Economic Literacy, Substance Abuse Prevention, Self Esteem, Self Reliance and Life Skills, Health and Sexuality, Sports and Adventure. Membership at Girls Inc. of SWCT offers girls the opportunity to compete with members across the United States and Canada for scholastic awards, participate in contests such as Corporate CampSM and the yearly Girls Inc. National Scholarship which has awarded girls across the nation and Canada with over two million dollars. One of the $15,000 scholarship recipients for 2008 is a Girls Inc. of SWCT member.
Girls Inc. of SWCT is dedicated to addressing the uncertainty and negative statistics that affect girls today. Girls Inc. of SWCT reacts to the local need of every girl and provides structure, support and guidance to help girls learn, have fun, realize dreams, and develop into their best selves. They strive to allow girls to discover that they can truly be and do anything.
