Giapo is a gelato store in central Auckland. It was established in January 2009 by Gianpaolo Grazioli. Giapo sells Italian Gelato and Sorbet, both of which are made in store. Giapo uses organic ingredients where possible, such as organic milk and fruit. Giapo is initiating a movement towards a trans-fat free New Zealand called "Eat Safe".. Trans fats are not used in the production of Giapo's products. Giapo was listed as one of Auckland’s Top Restaurants on the MenuMania website in the desserts/bakeries category. The Giapo's Story is based on a number of characters, named Giapo, Stella, Giordano, Moncino, Davi', Franco, Liro and Balu. These characters are used as part of the store’s décor. The characters are also used for the naming of the different products available at Giapo. Giapo’s specialty is the Super Giapo cone, which it claims to be the world’s largest commercially available cone. It consists of a 36cm tall waffle cone, coated in chocolate and nuts. On November 12th 2009, fans organized the first “Super Giapo Day” where followers of Giapo on Twitter and Facebook met to try the Super Giapo cone. Giapo uses social media including Twitter, Facebook and youtube. Since November 2009, a live webcam within the store has been installed, which streams to Ustream. Giapo has also pioneered giapoTV, the first social friendly TV ever made that with a click allows you to upload a video straight on youtube from a touch screen TV. Giapo has gained a significant following on the micro-blogging site Twitter. Active followers of Giapo are called ‘Giaponians’, and several followers have been given special rankings, following a royal-kingdom theme. Giapo works with the Starship foundation, and has started a christmas-time campaign for cash and gift donations, which go directly to Starship Hospital in Auckland
