Gary Avrin (died July 14, 1996) was a track marshal from Calgary, Alberta killed during the 1996 CART Molson Indy Toronto race held on July 14 at the Exhibition Place street circuit. Following a restart on lap 92 of the scheduled 95-lap event, Jeff Krosnoff and Stefan Johansson were battling for 16th place when their wheels touched in turn three. The Reynard-Toyota of Krosnoff was catapulted into the air and above the barriers lining the street circuit. His car made contact with a lamp post and disintegrated upon impact with the catch fencing, with the cockpit laying to rest on the opposite wall. Johansson, André Ribeiro and Emerson Fittipaldi were all forced to stop their cars in the runoff area. Avrin died instantly at the age of 44 after being struck by the Krosnoff vehicle. A fellow marshal, Barbara Johnston of Ypsilanti, Michigan suffered a head injury. The race was halted after the massive accident and was won by Adrian Fernandez.
