GALACTIC is a multinational company established in Belgium which specialises in the production and supply of lactic acid and lactates manufactured by the natural fermentation and purification of sugar beet and corn glucose. The company was created in 1993 by Frederic van Gansberghe and employs more than 300 personnel worldwide. With manufacturing units in Europe (Belgium), Asia (China) and America (US), it is commercially active in more than 65 countries and is one of the world’s leading suppliers with production set at approximately 100.000 tons per year. History *1993: A pioneering team of engineers launch the production of lactic acid under the company name Bioprocess Technology in partnership with Groupe Sucrier (Finasucre). *1994: Production launch with an initial capacity of 1.500 tons (lactic acid and lactates). *1997: The company name changes to Galactic and capacity is raised to 15.000 tons. *1998: Galactic becomes the second largest world producer of lactic acid and lactates, exporting 80% of its production to more than 40 countries. Galactic receives the Great Wallonia Export Prize which awards companies particularly successful in conquering new foreign markets. Galactic is granted its first patent on a revolutionary purification technology for lactic acid. Since then, the company has continued to innovate on processes, products as well as applications. *1999: Capacity is doubled to 30.000 tons. The holding company Compagnie du Bois Sauvage (CBS) becomes a shareholder of the company. *2002: Birth of , a joint venture with COFCO Biochemical (BBCA Biochemicals) for the production of L(+) lactic acid in Asia. *2005: Galactic opens a sales office in the United States (Milwaukee). *2007: Birth of Futerro, a joint venture between Galactic and TOTAL Petrochemicals for the production of polylactic acid - a promising biodegradable polymer derived from lactic acid for which Galactic has developed its own innovative technology. *2008: Launch of a new production line of calcium lactate. *2009: Galactic decides to further increase its R&D efforts especially in the fields of lactochemistry, meat applications and bakery applications with dedicated teams of specialists. It also launches a new production line of esters. *2010: B&G opens a sales office in Japan. *2011: Galactic increases capacity in the United States to 15.000 tons. Following food industry trends, Galactic develops tailor-made concepts regarding food safety, clean labelling and health improvement.
