Gaia Sabbatini (born 10 June 1999 in Teramo) is an Italian middle-distance runner and the 2017 national U20 indoor and outdoor champion. In 2016, Gaia Sabbatini placed first and second respectively in two prestigious national championships, i.e. the Brixia Meeting in Bressanone with 2:17.98 in the U18 (allieve) category on 800m (15 May 2016), and the High School Students Championships (Campionati studenteschi su pista, 31 May - 2 June 2016) in Rome with 2:57.70 also in the U18 (allieve) category, but on 1000m (2 June 2016). On 5 February 2017, she won the gold medal in the National U20 Indoor Championships in Ancona in the category 800m juniores (U20) with 2:13.19. On 10 June 2017, she broke her own personal record and with 2:08.92 she won the National U20 Outdoor Championships in Florence as well. In preparation of the 2017 European U20 Championships in Grosseto, Sabbatini also took part in the elite category of two championships, i.e. in the National Championships in Trieste on 2 July 2017, where she placed third in the 1500m category (4:21.25), and in the international meeting Athletissima in Lausanne on 6 July 2017, where she placed fifth in the 1500m category with 4:22.46. Sabbatini is a high school student at the Istituto Agrario I. Rozzi and represents her native town’s club ASD Atletica Gran Sasso of Teramo. Her coach is Marcello Viceré. Other information Gaia Sabbatini has an elder sister, Eva Sabbatini (10 March 1996), who was also a middle-distance runner and is now reading Law at the University of Padova. Her father, Pino Sabbatini, was a well known mountain guide and head of the Teramo mountain rescue service. He died on 14 December 2014 in an ice avalanche in Prati di Tivo. At the end of the school year 2015/16 there were polemics in the local press about Gaia's former school's lack of support.
