Festival holes

Festival Holes (as seen at www.festivalholes.com)is a backyard or tailgating game similar in concept to bags, cornhole or washers though ultimately has it's heritage in the basic rules of horseshoes. The basic items needed to play Festival Holes is:

-Two (2) standard garbage cans (35 gallon)
-One football
-Bricks or something else of somewhat substantial weight (used to hold the cans in place)
-2 or 4 players

Start out by setting the garbage cans a distance apart. Official rules are 25 feet apart but the distance may be decreased to accomodate varying ages of participants. Once set, place weighted material in the base of each garbage can and distribute it to the outer edges of the can to ensure optimal efficiency. From here gameplay can begin. Each team gets one throw per team participant (one throw per team for singles, two throws per team for doubles). Throwing motion can be of any sort (sidearm, underhand, overhand, etc) but the participant throwing may not touch the ground across the virtual line marked across the front of his/her "hole" (this line is imaginary and is marked tangentially across the point of the "hole" closest to the opposite "hole"). Crossing the line results in a score of zero for the throw. This action continues until one of the teams has reached 11 points (see scoring section below) but the winning team must win by at least two points with the team that did not throw first making the final throws.

Scoring

Each throw can score 0, 1 or 2 points. The scoring areas of the "hole" are represented by the entire interior of the garbage can as well as the vertical surface at the top of the rim. One point is scored when any part of a legally thrown ball touches any part of the vertical surface at the top of the rim. Two points are scored when any part of a legally thrown ball touches the inside of the "hole". Note that the ball need not remain in the "hole" to constitute a two point throw. This rule is in place to protect against the fact that with insufficient weighting the "hole" may tip over. It is for this reason that sufficient weighting (~30 lbs) is reccomended.

History

Festival Holes was founded by Zack Kluczenko with the assistance of Dan Tuerk in October of 2006.
