Ernest Smith is a former US Marine, Vietnam veteran, and an 8th degree black belt in Judo. Personal life Smith was born in Texas and enlisted in the Marines as a youth. Ernest is a former US Marine and Vietnam veteran. He retired from the Marines after two tours in Vietnam. Ernest would compete earning 5th in the 1973 Desert Championships. In 1974, he competed in the US Masters Nationals. Smith trained over 16 national champions. At the 2001 World Masters Judo Championship, Smith defeated the only other competitor (fellow Californian Eugene Reid) to win the gold medal in the 100 kg division of the 65-69 age group. He now sits on the board of the USJA promotion committee. |
