Drexel Squash

The Drexel Squash Club is an official athletic organization at Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA. The club consists of roughly 30 undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students, all of whom are dedicated squash players. Of the undergraduate club members, the top nine compete in the collegiate circuit, comprising the Drexel Squash Team. The Dragon's five home squash courts are located in the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center on 33rd and Market Streets. Additional international courts are currently being erected in the new health center annex, with a June 2009 anticipated date of completion.
The team also practices at the University of Pennsylvania Ringe Squash Courts.
History
Founded in 2005 by Evan Cyrkin & Justin Burkholder, the Drexel Squash Club has fathered a strong team competing in the intercollegiate circuit as well as the Philadelphia Squash Racquets Association. The purpose of the club was to form a platform for all squash enthusiasts at Drexel University to play competitively and build forever-lasting friendships along the way. The club received an overwhelming response, with membership continuing to swell. Since inception the Drexel Squash program has been hugely successful. At the close of the team's second year of competitive play, they finished 35th in the national rankings at the Men's National Intercollegiate Championships held at Harvard University.
The team has strong ties with SquashSmarts, a nonprofit organization providing academic tutoring and squash coaching to urban students who otherwise would not have had the opportunity due to potential socioeconomic barriers. The members of the Drexel Squash community volunteer weekly with the SquashSmarts students.
The newly established women's squash team has proven to be stiff competition for their opponents, competing in their first tournament last February at Princeton University.
