Dolgow

Dolgow is the German spelling of the Russian name Dolgov, in accordance with German spelling of Slavic names. Germany east of the Elbe River was inhabited by Slavic tribes (mostly the so-called Wends or Sorbs) as far as Lübeck (called Liubice by its Slavic founders) and the so-called Wendland in Lower Saxony. Until the abolition of the monarchy in 1918, Mecklenburg was ruled by a Wendish family, members of the so-called Obotrites, and the current Minister-President of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich, is of Wendish origin, a member of the Sorbian ethnic minority. Dolgow is also the name of a village in the Lower Saxon Wendland, part of Wustrow, and also a common family name in that region, with a different pronunciation from the Russian name.
