Devil Fruit

A is a fictional fruit from the manga and anime series of One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. They are known as the Cursed Fruit in the edited English TV dub.

Devil Fruit are said to be the fruit of the Sea Devil and that the secret to their power is hidden in the Grand Line. Because encounters with them are rare (especially outside the Grand Line) a number of rumors about them have risen making it difficult to tell whether some things are fact or fiction. The average person knows nothing or very little about what they are. Whoever eats a Devil Fruit will be unable to swim ever again.

Overview
The Devil Fruit, when consumed, gives the consumer a power or special trait. There are more than 100 types of Devil Fruit, they come in different shapes, colors, and all Devil Fruits have swirl marks on them of some kind . There can be only one of each type of fruit. Only one bite is needed for the user to gain the power of a Devil Fruit, after which the Devil Fruit becomes a simple, useless, disgusting fruit. Swallowing the fruit whole, as Buggy did, has the same effect. There have also been inanimate objects that have gained the power of Devil Fruits because of , such as Lassoo the dog/gun and Funkfreed the elephant/sword.

While the storyline hasn't revealed it, there seems to be certain ways of telling what powers a Devil Fruit will grant. Shanks and his crew already knew Luffy's Devil Fruit was the Gomu Gomu no Mi (Gum Gum Fruit in English versions) before he consumed it. Spandam mentions that the Devil Fruits he supplied to Kaku and Kalifa were not listed in any catalogs anywhere as to what powers they granted. He also mentions briefly that Devil Fruits have an aura around them which can often help identify them and that the two Devil Fruits he had contained an unknown aura. Another example is Marshall D. Teach, telling Portgas D. Ace in chapter 440 that he had memorized the shape of "every fruit in the book", thus knowing whom he needed to kill to acquire the power he sought. In chapter 464, Sanji stated that, as a boy, he read a book listing different devil fruits and their powers. In a recent SBS question, Oda revealed that all Devil Fruits are in a book somewhere in the Grand Line. Oda recently revealed in another SBS that the mystery behind the Devil Fruits would be revealed eventually (hints suggest that Vegabank will be the one to explain them) also in direct answer to a question about how the Fruits can be looked up in books after it was said by Usopp that "No two devil fruits exist", Oda rephrased it to "No two Devil Fruits exist AT THE SAME TIME" hinting that there is a way for Devil Fruits to reappear

In the original two pilots of One Piece, Luffy's Devil Fruit power, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, was the power of the Gomu Gomu tree that grew once every 50 years and there were no signs there existed other powers.

Many of the fruit names come from Japanese onomatopoeia and Japanese vocabulary.

Side Effects of Devil Fruit
With this new power comes a weakness: the sea rejects the new Devil Fruit user and they become helpless while submerged in water (or "becomes a hammer," in Japanese parlance). Oda stated in SBS that Devil Fruit users are susceptible to all types of water, not just seawater. He elaborated on this, saying that "moving" water, like rain or waves, does not weaken Devil Fruit users, while standing water does. If a user is not completely submerged, they can still use their powers from the parts of their body that are above the water. This was demonstrated by Kalifa, who was still able to produce bubbles from the parts of her body that were not under her bath water (although, as stated by Nami, this had effectively cut her strength in half while in the water). However, if the user's body has been permanently altered by the fruit, then the user's ability can be manipulated by outside sources; i.e., when Luffy was knocked into the pool at Arlong Park, other people dove underwater and stretched his neck so his head would be above water. Being weak against the sea proves deadly to many Devil Fruit users who are pirates sailing the Grand Line.

One rumor, as recounted by Jyabura, is that Devil Fruit house actual devils that will fight when placed in proximity of one another. The resulting battle would destroy the users' bodies. Nevertheless, Blueno contradicted this claim, stating that Grand Line scientists have noted that the phenomenon of one's body destroying itself only occurs when one consumes two Devil Fruits.

Devil Fruit powers can be canceled by Seastone.

Doctor Vegapunk, a Navy Scientist, has researched the effects of Devil Fruit and seastone heavily. He also devised the method that lets an object (such as a gun or a sword) merge with a Devil Fruit.

Types of Devil Fruits

Currently, 51 Devil Fruits are known (anime, manga, filler, and game). There are no two identical Devil Fruits in the world. There are three different types of Devil Fruits: , , and .

Paramecia-type

, known as Paramythia in the 4Kids English anime, and the Funimation Dub.
Effect
These alter the user's body in some way or give the user a special ability which does not fit into the other categories. For example: Gomu Gomu no Mi, which changes the user into stretchable rubber; also, Bara Bara no Mi, which gives the user command over splitting apart his own body and controlling the pieces at will.

Strength
Grants the user the ability to do a trait that can be classified only as 'superhuman'.
Weakness
The Paramecia type is also the group that contains the powers or special traits that can be considered 'useless' to the user, granting little or no real advantage whatsoever. Paramecia types are also the easiest to fight against. The reason being is that while the strengths of their powers give them an advantage, they also make them easy to predict and often their Devil Fruit abilities are displayed to their fullest within a very short period of time.

Other information
Paramecias are the most common of the Devil Fruits types. Paramecia fruits can be divided into several subcategories, as it is impossible to generalize the powers. For instance, Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi is always active, meaning that he's a rubber human at all times (Luffy's traits furthermore seem to be rare for a Paramecia, in that they also render his body the properties of the substance they imitate). Other users, like Miss Valentine or Miss Doublefinger must mentally activate the changes in their bodies, while again others like Foxy and Mr. 5 can't change their bodies at all. They however all seem to come in two basic types, abilities that directly affect the body (Gomu, Bara, Sube, Kilo, Baku, Mane, Supa, Toge, Bane, Kage, Suke) and abilities that give the user some power (Bomu, Doru, Hana, Ori, Noro, Doa, Hiso, Awa, Kama, Goe, Yomi, Horo, Nikyuu). Whatever powers a paramecia fruit gives, it is based on the concept of either a characteristic like slipperiness or slowness, or an object like a bomb or a door.

Zoan-type

, from "Zoanthropy," is the Animal Transformation Class.
Effect
Allows the user to transform into an animal. This fruit provides three forms: the user's natural form, a full animal form (where the animal's size is often greatly exaggerated), and a hybrid form, combining both original and animal form (usually in a bizarre way).

Strength
Mainly improves physical abilities and allows the user to use his or her 3 forms to adapt to a situation during a fight to find the form that gives the biggest advantage. In their hybrid form, Zoan users experience enhanced senses as this form uses a combination of both forms abilities. Zoan abilities are best for close combat, because of the enhanced strength and speed it gives. This fruit type is also useful when applied to objects such as guns or swords, giving an otherwise inanimate object life and increasing its value to the owner of the item.

Weakness
They are limited to the capabilities of the animal they are able to transform into. The Zoan type Devil Fruit is not wasted if eaten by the creature it represents. Instead they become the perfect example of said species. Should a human eat the Hito Hito no mi, (the human human fruit) the human would become enlightened, and be considered a 'perfect' human. Zoan type abilities are particularly difficult to train because of the ability's simplicity. However, in comparison to other Devil Fruits, the biggest weakness is purely its users fighting skills. For example Kaku, despite struggling to control his Devil Fruits three forms, was able to use his own trained fighting skills to exploit his Devil Fruit and in a very short time create a formidable fighting style around it.

Other information
While most users can only use the three forms, the Straw Hat Pirate's doctor Tony Tony Chopper can utilize more forms for a given amount of time with the aid of the "Rumble Ball", which he developed. It was stated by Chopper that carnivorous Zoans are considerably more bloodthirsty than other Zoans. A majority of the Zoan Devil fruits also come in different "models" that result in variations of the animal. For example, the Inu Inu (Dog) Fruit has a Jackal model, a Dachshund model and a Wolf model. The Ushi Ushi (Cow) Fruit has a Bison model and a Giraffe model. The Neko Neko (Cat) fruit has a Leopard model. A notable fact regarding The Tori Tori (bird) Fruit is that, according to Pell, there are only five known flying powers in the world. If a Zoan-user is knocked out while transformed into their half-beast or full-beast form, they will remain in that form while unconscious until they wake up to reverse the transformation. When Chopper is knocked out in one of his unique forms, he will revert to his most recently used regular form.

Logia-type

Effect
With these fruits, the user may actually become a natural element or compound, or form of energy in its entirety. Ever since their abilities are gained, they are neither completely human nor element in their default state. However, Logia users have the option of turning completely into their element if they so wish. This is often used for crossing great distances quickly, or avoiding blows should their weakness have been discovered.

Strength
The most powerful of the three groups. Even in their default states, Logia users are near invincible, taking no damage from physical attacks. For example, a blow can pass right through the user, while he maintains the rest of his body, and even can hold onto objects at the same time. If the ability is honed well enough, the user can manipulate anything related to their element, as well. For instance, through Crocodile's sand powers, he could control dryness and absorb moisture. In a similar example, Enel could utilize his electricity to generate heat to melt down, and reshape metals, by way of smelting. Logia users can tap unlimited amounts of their respective elements from their own bodies, and the "extracted" element be manipulated however the user wishes.

Weakness
Thus far there have been very few ways of dealing physical harm to a Logia user. There are two known methods used to cause harm to a Logia user. They are done either by neutralizing the Devil Fruit power, or by exploiting elemental weaknesses.

Damaging a Logia user through an elemental weakness may be done by either using the opposite element (an example of this would be Luffy landing blows on Enel regardless of the Goro Goro no Mi's electric powers because of his rubber body) or by using something that would simply prevent that element from being able to disperse itself to avoid damage (an example of this would be how both water and blood, while not being the elements that destroy sand, still work to hold Crocodile's sand body together to prevent it from dispersing).

Other information
Logia is the rarest of the three groups of Devil Fruit. Logia users cannot control their elements if the element is in another state of matter (i.e., Aokiji can control ice but not water). However, they may manipulate their surroundings into generating their element. Examples are Aokiji freezing an ocean, Crocodile turning a field of grass into a mini-desert, and Enel turning a cloud into a thunder cloud. These Devil Fruits are also not limited to the classical elements: fire, water, earth and air but includes physical and non-physical states like smoke, sand and darkness. Apparently, their clothes will also change into the element when transformed
