Delaware Valley Rails: The Railroads and Rail Transit Lines of the Philadelphia Area

Delaware Valley Rails: The Railroads and Rail Transit Lines of the Philadelphia Area is a guide to rail operations in the Delaware Valley as it pertains to passenger and freight. Carriers discussed include Amtrak, SEPTA, Conrail, the Delaware River Port Authority and New Jersey Transit. Shortline operators such as New Hope and Ivyland are also included.
First published in 1979, Pawson details the operations of each carrier, as well as their history and problems apparent at the time of publication. The sequence of topics are arranged by importance, historical background, corporate organizations, summary of railroad facilities, traffic loads, operations, maintenance, motive power, rolling stock, fare systems, timetables.
A section entitled "Places of Interest" is also included as to guide railfans to stations or sites that are unique, picturesque or hold historical importance.
Several detailed maps, arranged by Pawson, are also sprinkled throughout the reference.
To date, Delaware Valley Rails remains the quintessential and most comprehensive work available on the subject matter, despite the fact that several railroads lines described have ceased to operate (i.e. ) or have been abandoned entirely.
The publication is currently out of print.
