Deaths of Christopher Stewart and Deanna Rivers

On the night of December 1, 2012, Shenendehowa High School students Christopher Stewart, Deanna Rivers and Matthew Hardy along with Shaker High School student Bailey Wind were traveling up Interstate 87 when at 10:19 PM EST, just north of the Twin Bridges, Stewart's car was struck by Dennis Drue, who was under the influence of alcohol. Stewart and Rivers were killed, while Hardy and Wind were injured. Drue was transported to Albany Medical Center, where he was treated for light head injuries. Aftermath Drue was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, among 57 other counts of a 58 count indictment. He plead guilty to all counts and was sentenced to 5-15 years imprisonment on December 5, 2013. Shenendehowa High School held a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims on December 5, 2012. After the crash, two hashtag campaigns were started: #TebowCallMatt and #MissyCallBailey, referring to professional baseball player and former professional football quarterback Tim Tebow, and Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin. The campaigns ended with both Franklin and Tebow calling Bailey Wind and Matthew Hardy, respectively. The campaign got national coverage. Every June, there is a softball tournament in memory of Deanna Rivers. Drue was denied parole in 2018. He will be up for parole in 2020.
