David Poe

David Poe is an American songwriter, singer, musician, performer and composer for film, dance and theater.
Biography
David Poe was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and raised in Dayton, Ohio, where he performed and recorded with local bands. He graduated from Miami University (Oxford) and relocated to New York City in 1992, serving as a live mix engineer for the performance art venue CB's 313 Gallery until he was signed to Sony Music in 1996.
Poe's self-titled debut (1997 in US; 1999 in Europe on Ulftone) was produced by T-Bone Burnett. Poe followed his debut with The Late Album (2002) and Love Is Red (2004 in Europe, 2005 in the US by 720/The Lab/Universal Music Group,) and a live performance DVD entitled David Poe: Onstage at World Café Live Universal Music Group. An EP of performances from a 2006 American tour was released by The Artists Den on iTunes as David Poe: Live and Solo. Poe began scoring films in 2007 and has composed two scores for dance: "The Copier" for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (2008) and "Shadowland: Music for Pilobolus (2010).
As a songwriter, he is known for clever wordplay ("You're The Bomb," "Moon," "Reunion," "Wilderness," "Love Is Red") and for adventurous arrangements which combine unusual orchestration, classic rock and acoustic music ("The Late Song (Je Ne Suis Pas Mort)", "Gun For A Mouth," "Not Enough Night.") His eponymous debut was awarded a coveted four stars by Rolling Stone, who said Poe "gives the singer-songwriter genre a much-needed jolt." The Late Album, his second effort, took him around the globe as support act for the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Tori Amos and earned him the award for Best New Artist in the 2004 German Music Critic Poll. In the UK, NME likened Poe's songs to "miniature novels;" back home in New York, Time Out! called Poe "the perfect man."
His songs have been featured in numerous films and television shows, including Transamerica, Duane Hopwood, Jesus Henry Christ, The O.C. and Dawson's Creek. Poe scored the films Pocket Pair (2007), The Brooklyn Heist (2008), Dare (2009), Harvest (2009) and Partime Fabulous (2010). He also composed scores for two premiere dance pieces: "The Copier", a dance piece by choreographer Jill Johnson, which premiered in 2008 at Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Shadowland, the first shadow dance piece by Pilobolus. His song "Joy" was part of the Pilobolus performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the 2009 Royal Variety Performance in Blackpool, UK.
Poe is composer fellow of the Sundance Institute.
Poe helped produce the 2004 Concerts For Change series in New York, Minneapolis and London in an effort to change American leadership. The effort registered thousands of new American voters. In 2005, he served for as artist-in-residence of the media collective Artists Den, a music discovery project.
Poe has produced recordings by Melissa Sheehan, Jenifer Jackson, Regina Spektor and Golden Smog guitarist Kraig Jarret Johnson and jazz trumpeter John "Scrapper" Sneider and written songs with several artists, including Grace Potter, Reni Lane Timbuk 3's Pat MacDonald, Larry Goldings, T-Bone Burnett and Duncan Sheik.
