Dave Smallen is a musician and artist from Oakland, California. History Dave Smallen began his musical career as the singing/songwriting front man of the band Street to Nowhere in 2001. When the band went their separate ways for college, he began performing solo acoustic shows all over Northern California while attending UC Santa Cruz as an art major. During the summer of 2004 Dave worked as a guitar tech for The Matches and transferred to UCLA for one quarter before dropping out and moving back to Oakland to focus on recording Street to Nowhere's first album, Charmingly Awkward, which was self-released in 2005. After a frenzy of attention from major labels, the group was signed to Capitol Records and re-released the album under the label in August 2006. A label merger in 2007 left the album under-promoted, though, and Smallen requested a drop from the label, granting the rights of the album back to the band. As the front man of Street to Nowhere, Dave Smallen has played shows all across the United States, opening national tours for such bands as The Format, Matt Pond PA, Kevin Devine, Straylight Run, Rocky Votolato, The New Amsterdams, Piebald, State Radio, , Rainer Maria, and Lostprophets, among others. Going Solo In 2008, Smallen announced the disbandment of Street to Nowhere, and since then has been performing under his own name. He began 2009 with simultaneous residencies in New York at The Living Room, and in Philadelphia at The Khyber, followed by tours through New England and scattered shows around the West Coast, sharing the stage with the likes of Matt Nathanson, Josh Ritter, Ari Hest, and others. Dave Smallen released his first solo record, Everything Changes and Nothing Changes, over the course of 2009, releasing it one song at a time (at the first of each month), culminating in a full length LP on December 1st. Each song was coupled with an original piece of Smallen’s artwork: full color woodblock prints. The album was recorded with producer Mark Weinberg (Matt Nathanson, Gratitude). He collaborated with members of Audrye Sessions, and Maniac, as well as various studio musicians during the process. Discography Albums * Everything Changes and Nothing Changes (December 2009)
