Crystal Baller

"Crystal Baller" is a song by the American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind. It was the second single released from the band's 2003 album, Out of the Vein. The song was well-received by critics but did not chart.
Background
"Crystal Baller" was written by Stephan Jenkins. The album that it was released on was also going to be called Crystal Baller, but it was eventually changed to Out of the Vein. When asked about the name change, Jenkins said, "The rest of the band wouldn't let me name Crystal Baller. They never let me do anything. Crystal Baller sort of a play on words. Like a baller...a shot caller. And then a crystal ball is, you know, being able to sort of look into the future. So I thought Crystal Baller would be, like, to create your own prominent future, which I thought was a good title. The band didn't like it. But I think Out of the Vein is good."
Release
"Crystal Baller" was released as a single from Third Eye Blind's 2003 album, Out of the Vein. It was also included on the band's 2006 compilation album, A Collection.
Critical reception
"Crystal Baller" received positive reviews from music critics. Rachel Kipp of The London Free Press wrote, "The lack of an obvious standout means it's necessary to listen closely to appreciate the album's merits. One of those is Crystal Baller, which features a shimmering acoustic guitar and quiet, contemplative delivery from Jenkins." Entertainment Weeklys Tom Sinclair wrote that "cuts like 'Danger' and 'Crystal Baller' leap out, flaunting a big, bright, clamorous sound; if anyone asks what constitutes 'modern rock' (an actual Billboard chart designation), play them one of these tunes."
