The Chiriseri Test, is a set of questions which can be used as a guide to newsroom diversity. The test was developed in 2022 by filmmaker and journalist Zoe Ramushu a fellow of the Reuters Institute at Oxford University. Similar to its predecessor, The Bechdel Test, passing or failing the test is not necessarily indicative of how diverse one’s newsroom is. Rather, the test provides a method to evaluate not only the representation, but the effective engagement of all races, classes, gender, ethnicity, religions and sexual orientations to the benefit of a newsroom. The test is said to be first test of this kind for journalism. The Chiriseri test can be used by any new agency as a beginner’s guide. *Do you picture your entire newsroom when you think about diversity, and not just specific members of staff? *Does everyone feel empowered to pitch and greenlight stories that are important to their communities? *Are your journalists able to tell stories from the perspective of their people in a way that resonates with them? *Do you have diverse sources for 'all' your stories?
