Brendan Francis McMahon who made headlines in July and August, 2005. His conviction was overturned by Chief Justice Blanche of the District Court in November 2006 on the grounds that at the time, he was suffering from a short term drug induced mental illness psychosis.
He bought animals from pet stores. He had smoked methamphetamine regularly for the preceding three months up to when he killed the animals. The carcasses were found with shattered skulls. McMahon was found guilty of 17 charges, there being proof of the death of 17 rabbits. A charge of bestiality was dropped when the prosecutor submitted a negative DNA report. He jointly operated MearesMcMahon Capital, a finance and mortgage brokering firm. He was also involved in a forest conservation sub-division which covenanted 10 hectares of NZ native podocarp forest to be protected from farming and forestry in perpetuity.
