After winning custody of his son, Gotti placed the boy in seclusion at the family's home in Oyster Bay Cove on . However, when he turned 14, the young Gotti was placed in the care of a family friend Vincent Astorre. He was murdered in 2001 and placed in the trunk of his Corvette Convertible after it was discovered he was a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant and Gotti again went to live with family, his father being in prison at the time.
Criminal activity
As a teenager, the young Gotti was involved in several crimes that earned the fury of his father. Arrested nineteen times for various offenses that included assault, burglary, and grand theft auto he served a sentence of 18 months in prison in 2004. There he met Anthony Morelli, a 16 year-old convicted drug dealer; and upon release the two set up a drug outfit that began earning money for the Gambino family. However, Gotti was forced to end the relationship in 2006 when Morelli was arrested outside a Manhattan night club for assaulting a dancer. Morelli disappeared three months later and his body has never been found.
==Becoming a "Made Man"==
Gotti "made his bones" with the murder of in 2006. Salvatore's wealthy family was involved in the New York waste management business. At the time of his execution his family's waste sanitation corporation was involved in a bidding contract war over garbage routes controlled by a Gambino family front organization. Gotti lured him to Abbandando's Deli under the pretense of seeking an amicable solution to the problem. Gotti then shot him twice in the back of the head before dismembering him and disposing of the body in a Portella family dumpster as an example. Gotti killed Salvatore without authorization from the family in an effort to gain recognition and rise through the ranks. The murder elevated him to a "man of honor" in the Gambino family and he was quickly seen as the legitimate successor to his father as boss of the Gambino crime family.
