BPI Energy Holdings Inc. () was an independent energy company based in Solon, Ohio. The company is engaged in the exploration, production and commercial sale of coalbed methane (CBM) in the Illinois Basin, covering over <span style="white-space:nowrap">60,000 square miles (160,000 km²)</span> in Illinois, southwestern Indiana and northwestern Kentucky. The company has initiated gas sales from its Southern Illinois Basin Project and controls a dominant CBM land position in the Illinois Basin. James G. Azlein was the company's president and CEO. On February 3, 2009, BPI Energy Holdings, Inc. ("BPI Holdings") and its wholly owned subsidiary, BPI Energy, Inc. ("BPI Energy"), filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division. BPI Holdings and BPI Energy are continuing to operate their businesses and manage their affairs as debtors in possession under the Bankruptcy Code. The company unsuccessfully sued Drummond Company after Drummond withdrew from a letter of intent which would have allowed BPI to extract coalbed methane from Drummond's coalbeds.
