Bill Cormalis Jr

Bill (William) Alfred Cormalis Jr. (born July 29, 1974) is an American artist, painter, illustrator. Bill Cormalis Jr. is a self taught artist out of Los Angeles Ca. The work of Picasso, Van Gogh, Stuart Davis, James Castle, Klee and Rembrandt, inspire the diverse nature of Bills work, from creating Collages and Assemblages, to painting portraits and abstract. The use of recycled items in Bills work is common. Mostly known for his ink drawings, which have been featured on jewelry, apparel, skateboards.
Early Life
Bill Cormalis Jr. was born on July 29th 1974, in Arcadia, a Los Angeles suburb in Southern California. He is the first child, of four, born to Renee Cheryl Campbell and William Alfred Cormalis Sr. His mother is of Sottish descent, born in Monrovia California, and his father is of Southern European descent (Greek, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese), born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bill showed passion and skill for drawing at an early age; according to his mother drew a picture of her with a baby in her stomach area while pregnant with her third child, son Christopher. He also drew everything from animals to Star Wars battle scenes. In his formidable years (1985-1992), being a skateboarder opened his eyes to an entirely different realm of creativity. With exposure from the pages of skate magazines, he began to experiment with painting, doing grip tape art, and making stencils. As a fan of sports, Bill also drew many of the days star athletes.
Growing up in a musical family(his dad plays guitar, mother plays piano, oldest sister Jenny plays multiple horns, youngest sister Jessica plays guitar), music is also a major influence, and subject in many of his artworks.
Early Career
In 2004 Bill began work as a sign maker, where he specialized in sandblasted redwood signs that are hand painted and gold leafed, as well as graphic production, fabrication and installation. 2004 was also the first year Bill showed his paintings publicly at the annual Monrovia "Celebrate the Arts" Festival. At this event, Bill's talent for painting was discovered, and was hired by the Monrovia Unified School District, in Monrovia Ca., to produce murals promoting staying active and eating right. funded by the F.D.A and U.S.D.A. Bill has painted three murals for the M.U.S.D. In 2005-early 2006, Bill was represented by SK Visuals, a gallery located in Sierra Madre, CA. Soon after his representation at SK Visuals, Bill began exhibiting work at group shows and exhibitions. In July 2008, Bill was a featured Artist at the "Weapons of Mainstream Destruction" show at Zeem Haven, located in the Oldtown Pomona Arts District. In October 2008 Bill exhibited artwork at the "MusicShare" charity benefit, in Downtown Los Angeles CA. Notable artists with work in the show were; Shepard Fairey, Slash (GnR), Mark Mothersbaugh, Ron English, Lemmy Kilmeister (Motorhead). Bill has shown at Light Galley, The Grind, Infusions Gallery, Sk Visuals, The Art Factory, Hangar 1018, Zeem Haven.
Personal Life
Bill is the father of daughter Ashley, born 1994, and son William the Third, born 2001. Children from previous marriage.
Work
Bill works in multiple mediums; painting, collage, illustration. In Feb. 2009 Bill signed on to be an Artist for Tattooed Steel, where his designs are used on accessories and jewelry. In July 2009, he was the first winner of Tattooed Steels 777 Limited Design contest. Bill's ink drawing "Muffinbones" was chosen by Ovation TV to be part of a TV promo called MY ART, where the featured artists work is shown as an "On Air" commercial promo, November 2009.
