Basant Bhattarai

Basant Bhattarai(), a Nepalese politician belong to Nepali Congress, a major political party of Nepal was born in Tehrathum Nepal. He was grown in Bayerban, Morang, Nepal and later brought to Biratnagar where he did his school and college education. He started his political career in Biratnagar at the age of 18 when he joined Mahendra Morang Aadarsha Bahumukhi Campus. He was very bold and strong as well as actively involved in the political party due to which he was nominated as one of the hijackers of the first Nepali plane hijack. The first and historical Biratnagar Plane Hijack which was carried out for political purpose was successful because of the leader like him. He was only 21 on June 10, 1973 when he was holding a revolver and announcing "the cockpit is compromised and the plane has been hijacked". Biratnagar Airport is the airport where hijackers were able to sneak into the plane with their guns for the first time in the history of Nepal and carried out the hijack.
Political career
Basant Bhattarai is well known figure in the politics of Nepal due to his historical plane hijack which was meant to provide fund for democratic movement to restore democracy in the country. He was nominated as a candidate to fight the National election of Nepal for 3 consecutive time from Morang-2. In 1994 General Election, he became runner up with 9174 votes against Bharat Mohan Adhikari (16758 votes). In 1999 General Election, he again became runner up with 18364 votes against Bharat Mohan Adhikari (22428 votes). It is said that in second he lost due to conspiracy hatched against him.
In the third time in 2008 Nepal Constituent Assembly Election, he lost with a maoist leader.
Although he lost the elections due to misfortune and conspiracy, he is still regarded a hero as he contributed a lot for the restoraton of democracy in Nepal in 1990. Plane hijack is just an example. There were so many things like this that he had done for the restoration of democracy.
His Contribution
Basanta Bhattarai was appointed as a Chairman of Sukumbashi Aayog of Morang-2 during which he distributed land certificates (dhanipurja) to the landless people in the area. He also improved the electricity and transportantion system of the area. He provided jobs and opportunities to many jobless people of the area. He started training like knitting, stitching, etc. for women and jobless. He established many youth clubs and sporting clubs in the area. Among the clubs, Pravat Samudayik Yuba Club (Old Name: Pravat Sporting Yuba Club) runs smoothly till today. Keshav Bhattarai, the present chairman of the club organises sports, cultural programmes, blood donations, etc. in different occasions.
