Arabrein is a word coined during the summer of 1987 by Israeli newspapers in response to a series of pogroms against Arabs in Israel. According to Israeli Professor Israel Shahak, The Hebrew press at that time invented, or reinvented, using Hebrew characters, a German word, Arabrein, which means in German, “clean of Arabs,” from the German word employed by the Nazis, , “clean of Jews.” They invented the expression in order to refer to what was happening - a process of Nazification. It is has been adopted as a pejorative term by some critics of Israeli policy regarding the Palestinians.
