Andrei Gapanenko (born on 19 December 1987 in Perm) is a former Russian-Canadian soccer player who last plays for the North York Astros in the Canadian Soccer League. Early life Gapanenko was born in Russian city Perm and grew-up in Richmond Hill, Ontario in Canada. Career As a youth, Gapanenko played for Thornhill Thunder, Unionville Strikers, and Glen Shields Sun Devils. He also represented . He later played for Portugal FC and then in the Portuguese Canadian Soccer League for FCP Woodbridge. After a successful season with FCP Woodbridge he signed the North York Astros. He captained the reserve team, and in his first season with the Astros, Gapanenko contributed by appearing in 11 games with the first team and helping the team clinch a playoff spot. He also helped the Astros set an all time record for most points and wins in a season. But unfortunately during their playoff run the Astros were eliminated by the Serbian White Eagles in the quarterfinal match, with the game ending 2-1 in favor of the White Eagles. On May 27, 2009 the newly appointed Astros head coach Ugur Cimen re-signed Gapanenko for the 2009 season. On June 27, 2009 in a match against Toronto Croatia Gapanenko sustained an injury that forced him to miss the remaining 2009 season. Andrei rise in Canadian Football can only be attributed to his tremendous tackling abilities, with him garnering a reputation as an enforcer. He has a tendency of leading his team and league in Red and yellow cards.
